Nonverbal communication abilities were examined as mediators of martial complaints for a sample of 48 recently married couples. Based on social penetration theory, we predicted that couples cohabiting longer would be better at decoding their partners' nonverbal expressions than couples cohabiting a shorter time, that individuals married to accurate nonverbal communicators would evidence fewer martial complaints, and that individuals with fewer ma…
Parental Role Perceptions of Ghanian and American Adolescents
The Parsons and Bales instrumental-expressive role differentiation model of family structure was evaluated cross-culturally. Utilizing the Semantic Differential technique, adolescent subjects from the United States and Ghana described their perceptions of components of their parents' role performance. Sex and cultural differences were found. These did not support the Parsons and Bales conceptualization
A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Adolescent Perception of Parental Roles
The Parsons and Bales instrumental-expressive role differentiation model of family structure and a modification of the model suggested by Breznitz and Kugelmass were evaluated cross-culturally. Adolescent samples from the United States, Ghana, and Israel were compared in terms of perceptions of their parents functioning in instrumental and expressive areas utilizing an instrument developed by Breznitz and Kugelmass.
