  • Informalisierung, Deinstitutionalisierung, Politisierung

Holger Krimmer, Peter Schubert et al.•ARTICLE•Forschungsjournal Soziale…•2022

  • Willaert’s Elusive Counterpoint Explained

    Open Access•Peter Schubert•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2022

Willaert’s contrapuntal idiom in Musica Nova (1559) has been characterized as “elusive” because it “largely eschews imitative textures, clear cadential articulations, distinctive rhythmic patterns and tuneful melodic ideas ( soggetti )” (Fromson 2001). The present study aims to elucidate Willaert’s contrapuntal techniques in a late madrigal, “Io mi rivolgo.” Here, Willaert distinguishes sections by applying a different contrapuntal technique to e…

  • Sometimes the Music Wins

    Open Access•Peter Schubert•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2021•References: 13

This study applies Kofi Agawu's proposed method for analyzing texted music (1992), in which the music and the text are analyzed separately before they are considered together, to an early madrigal by Willaert. Focusing primarily on counterpoint, I offer a detailed study of Willaert's complex compositional technique. I show that he responded to the poem in many ways, but at the same time he made many purely musical decisions. Finally, I consider w…

  • If Someone Else Pays for Overhead, Do Donors Still Care

Open Access•Cleopatra Charles, Margaret F Sloan et al.•ARTICLE•The American Review of Public…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 4

To better evaluate the effectiveness of overhead-free donations on giving behavior, we seek to further investigate the robustness of the findings from Gneezy et al. using a nonstudent population. In an online experiment, we test whether (a) the level of overhead costs affects giving decisions and whether (b) overhead aversion disappears once donors are informed that an anonymous donor has already covered all overhead costs. Results show that dona…

  • Thomas Campion's "Chordal Counterpoint" and Tallis's Famous Forty-Part Motet

    Open Access•Peter Schubert, Peter N Schubert•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2018•References: 11

The compositional process behind the iconic Tallis forty-part motet,Spem in alium(ca. 1570) remains an enigma. Did he really check every pair of voices for illegal parallels? The author proposes a scenario based on Thomas Campion's "Rule" for connecting notes in three voices above a bass. This very clever system ensures the presence of all three interval-classes above the bass (third, fifth, and root), and makes parallels impossible. The treatise…

  • What Modular Analysis Can Tell Us About Musical Modeling in the Renaissance

    Open Access•Peter Schubert, Marcelle Lessoil-Daelman•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•2013•References: 8

Two Kyrie movements by Lassus and Palestrina, both based on a famous chanson by Lupi, are analyzed. Modular analysis, which involves tracking repeating contrapuntal combinations, is applied to the model and to the imitation pieces. It reveals the two composers' different approaches to their material: Palestrina works from within, increasing contrapuntal density, while Lassus builds long, formally structured spans
