Development in the context of electrification and the lithium industry: The view of the citizens of San Pedro de Atacama
Most citizens do not oppose mining outright but see its impacts as largely negative. • Mining views are shaped by weak state presence and corporate influence. • Support for mining depends on economic and socio-environmental gains and impacts. • State absence and capital dominance have shifted justice priorities. • Views vary both within and between Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups. In the face of the climate emergency, lithium is seen as esse…
Minería y Acción Industrial en el Valle del Huasco, Región de Atacama, Chile. Una Mirada Socioecológica
The article proposes four interfaces that highlight the importance of mining and industrial action as agents of transformations that, at least from the 18th century onwards, conditioned the trajectory of many natural and social processes in the Huasco Valley. These interfaces correspond to: the logging and disappearance of vernacular vegetation during the 18th century; the expansion of mining capital in the agricultural sector and the deteriorati…
Bringing the state back in the lithium triangle: An institutional analysis of resource nationalism in Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia
International efforts to tackle climate change have ignited a global surge in demand for the “critical metals” that are used in the production of lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicles (EVs). Among them, lithium represents a critical strategic component that is concentrated in only a limited number of extractive zones. In theory, limited availability and strong demand creates favourable conditions for producer states. In practice, many state…

The capital and mining that has been in the Antofagasta region since the late 19th century brought profound social and environmental transformation. The deep-rooted process finds continuity and expansion in today's lithium mining of the Atacama salt flats (Salar de Atacama). The ethnic dimension of collective action in this territory since the 1990s has redefined intercultural relations. In the second decade of this century, mining companies and …
Mining indigenous territories: Consensus, tensions and ambivalences in the Salar de Atacama
Lithium mining in Chile's Salar de Atacama (SdA) has a relatively long and controversial history, especially when it comes to the local Indigenous peoples. In this context, this paper looks at the ways mining activities, and different visions of territory and indigeneity co-produce each other in the particular context of the SdA. For this, we use historical and ethnographic methods and draw on studies in anthropology and geography. We aim to esca…
