  • Slavery as a Human Institution

John Edward Philips, John Edward Philips John Edward Philips•ARTICLE•Afrika Zamani•2022•References: 4

Scholars of slavery have long been divided between those who define slaves primarily as human property and those who define slaves primarily as kinless outsiders. This article reconciles these competing definitions by using the new understanding of definitions popularized by George Lakoff in his book Women, Fire and Dangerous Things. The two formal definitions that have been offered are really two sides of the same coin. Slaves in Africa were pro…

  • Recent Studies of African History in Japan

    Open Access•John Edward Philips•ARTICLE•History Compass•2009•References: 1

African history in Japan is a tiny part of the total output of history in Japan. It is difficult to categorize within the traditional divisions of history in Japan, and it is somewhat of an orphan, although it has been recognized as a subfield. Sub‐Saharan Africa in precolonial times is considered the domain of anthropology, not history, despite the fact that Japanese archeology is considered history rather than anthropology. Most historical work…

  • Perversion de l'Histoire

John Edward Philips•ARTICLE•African and Asian Studies•2005

Japan's quest for a permanent United Nations Security Council seat could be expected to lead to an increased importance for foreign language and area studies in Japan, as it did in the United States. This is particularly the case with Japan, an insular nation proud of its homogeneity with little history of immigration. Despite the inherently greater difficulties for Japan in trying to understand the outside world, there has been little increase i…

In Japan, as in the United States, African studies is relatively new, gaining respectability only after World War II. African studies in Japan is considerably less prominent than its counterpart in the US although Africanist scholars from Japan have nonetheless made notable contributions. The increasing importance of Japan in Africa, both as a source of investment and as a source of foreign aid, is leading to an increased importance cf Japanese k…

  • Some Recent Thinking on Slavery in Islamic Africa and the Middle East

    Open Access•John Edward Philips•ARTICLE•Middle East Studies Association…•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Slavery and its effects will probably long remain among the most contentious of topics. Outlawed universally only recently, the institution is one of humanity’s oldest and most widespread forms of domination. It still exists, despite laws to the contrary, in some societies around the world. Social disabilities suffered by former slaves and their descendants are important legacies. And the lessons which the history of slavery can teach us have sti…
