Losing the Plot
Pardis Dabashi's Losing the Plot revises the way modernist plot can be conceived in conversation with narrative film, though the two are rarely linked. At first, the book's aim is to show the breakdown of plot in nineteenth-century “realism.” After locating itself through various theoretical underpinnings, the book reaches toward “Hollywood mainstream cinema” as necessarily “palliative” for the three writers discussed: Nella Larsen, Djuna Barnes,…
Functional links between thermoregulation and sleep in children with neurodevelopmental and chronic health conditions
The bi-directional relationship between sleep and wake is recognized as important for all children. It is particularly consequential for children who have neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) or health conditions which challenge their sleep and biological rhythms, and their ability to maintain rhythms of participation in everyday activities. There are many studies which report the diverse reasons for disruption to sleep in these populations. Predo…

Skin Temperatures of Back or Neck Are Better Than Abdomen for Indication of Average Proximal Skin Temperature During Sleep of School-Aged Children
Local forehead and abdomen skin temperatures are least suitable as single site representations of average proximal skin temperatures in school aged children when considering both the level and the time course pattern of the temperature across the night. Conversely, back and neck temperatures provide most fitting representation of average proximal skin temperatures
The British Hitchcock
The British Hitchcock
From 1929 to 1939, before launching his Hollywood career, Alfred Hitchcock directed sixteen sound films in Britain. While Hitchcock fans and film scholars lavish more attention on his later work, many of his themes, motifs, and techniques emanate from this decade. Moreover, during this politically pitched era, England collectively suffered from the post-traumatic shock of the First World War, and turned a deaf ear to the growing signs of internat…

Borderline Modernism
The silent 1930 film Borderline has long attracted the archival interest of modernist scholars because it features Paul and Eslanda Robeson as well as the American expatriate poet Hilda Doolittle (or H.D. as she became known). However, the film has been largely sequestered in the vaults of the Museum of Modern Art, not available commercially and rarely screened. G.W. Pabst (the director H.D. most admired) called Borderline "the only real avant-ga…
