  • In the Name of Love: White Organizations and Racialized Emotions

    Open Access•Sarah Diefendorf, C J Pascoe•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2025•Cited by: 5•References: 54

This article bridges the gap between insights from a theory of racialized organizations and insights from a theory of racialized emotions by asking what role these emotions play in organizations. Drawing on a combined four years of ethnographic data from two predominantly White organizations in the Pacific Northwest - a conservative evangelical mega-church and a progressive public high school - we argue that these two organizations address racial…

  • A sociology of bullying: Placing youth aggression in social context

    Open Access•Christopher Donoghue, C J Pascoe•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 11

In this paper we review the sociological literature on peer aggression among adolescents and demonstrate how it can form the basis of a new subfield in sociology on the subject of bullying. Although sociologists have mostly avoided the term bullying in classic works on adolescent aggression, these studies suggest that institutional social control, status hierarchies and social inequalities provide important social context for youth aggression. Wh…

  • Dude, You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School

    C J Pascoe•BOOK•Dude, You're a Fag•2020•Cited by: 292

In Dude, You're a Fag, C. J. Pascoe draws on ethnographic research conducted at a high school in California to offer a nuanced and groundbreaking examination of how American boys construct masculinity. Pascoe finds that masculinity is defined primarily through dominance and control, and that any deviation from this norm is labeled "fag." This epithet is not necessarily about homophobia; rather, it is used to police the boundaries of masculinity, …

  • Dude, You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School, With a New Preface

    C J Pascoe•BOOK•Dude, You're a Fag•2019

High school and the difficult terrain of sexuality and gender identity are brilliantly explored in this smart, incisive ethnography. Based on eighteen months of fieldwork in a racially diverse working-class high school, Dude, You're a Fag sheds new light on masculinity both as a field of meaning and as a set of social practices. C. J. Pascoe's unorthodox approach analyzes masculinity as not only a gendered process but also a sexual one. She demon…

  • Who is a Real Man? The Gender of Trumpism

    Open Access•C J Pascoe•ARTICLE•Masculinities & Social Change•2017•Cited by: 11•References: 7

The rise of Trumpism exemplifies a contest over masculinity, over who qualifies as a “real man.” This contest being waged not only by some obvious actors – President Trump, his supporters and representatives; it is a contest also waged by those who oppose the current administration and are perhaps actively working against the perpetuation of gender inequality. The themes deployed by Trumpists and anti-Trumpists alike address a core component of m…

    Open Access•Tristan Bridges, C J Pascoe•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2014•Cited by: 270•References: 12

Hybrid masculinity refers to men's selective incorporation of performances and identity elements associated with marginalized and subordinated masculinities and femininities. We use recent theorization of hybrid masculinities to critically review theory and research that seeks to make sense of contemporary transformations in masculinity. We suggest that research broadly supports three distinct consequences associated with recent changes in perfor…

  • Notes on a Sociology of Bullying: Young Men's Homophobia as Gender Socialization

    C J Pascoe•ARTICLE•QED A Journal in GLBTQ Worldmaking•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Popular and academic discourses frame bullying as something that one, often high-status, homophobic kid directs at another, often lower status, GLB young person, frequently with devastating results. This article unpacks current popular and academic discourses of bullying. In doing so it highlights the important role these aggressive interactions play in boys' gender socialization. Using a case study of homophobic bullying among teenage boys in ad…

  • Pro-anorexia Communities and Online Interaction: Bringing the Pro-ana Body Online

    Open Access•Natalie C Boero, Natalie Boero et al.•ARTICLE•Body & Society•2012•Cited by: 23•References: 40

This article details the making of community and bodies in online environments, specifically the online pro-anorexia community. Building community among members of these groups is particularly fraught because tensions over claims to authenticity permeate these groups. Because these are embodied practices and online spaces are presumably disembodied, participants constantly grapple with authenticity, largely through the threat of the 'wannarexic'.…

This article focuses on new modes of inquiry into youth new media use, highlighting the challenges, complexities, and opportunities inherent in studying young people's digital cultures. It outlines methodological issues unique to studies of youth and new media, such as accessing popu…

Open Access•Mizuko Ito, Heather A Horst et al.•CHAPTER•Living and Learning with New Media•2009

Social network sites, online games, video-sharing sites, and gadgets such as iPods and mobile phones are now fixtures of youth culture. They have so permeated young lives that it is hard to believe that less than a decade ago these technologies barely existed. Today’s youth may be coming of age and struggling for autonomy and identity as did their predecessors, but they are doing so amid new worlds for communication, friendship, play, and self-ex…

  • ‘Dude, You’re a Fag’: Adolescent Masculinity and the Fag Discourse

    Open Access•C J Pascoe•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2005

This article argues that American adolescent boys become masculine through the continual repudiation of a ‘fag’ identity. Using insights from sociologists of interaction and post-structural theorists of sexuality this article demonstrates that the fag insult has multiple meanings which are primarily gendered but also sexualized and raced. This article builds on prior analyses of adolescent homophobia by (1) pointing to the limits of an argument t…

    Open Access•C J Pascoe•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2003•Cited by: 22•References: 16

Through interviews with 20 teenage boys at two high schools, the author examines the ways in which boys from different school subcultures engage with the most dominantly masculine of the school's peer groups-the Jocks. The author investigates how boys from less "masculine" groups maintain a sense of self as masculine. The boys do this by reworking meanings of group membership and gendered identity to include masculinized attributes associated wit…
