  • Site Context and the Spatial Organization of a Late Holocene Coastal Hunter-Gatherer Campsite in North-Central Chile, South America

Open Access•César Méndez, Matthieu Carré et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2020•References: 26

We explored the site context of a late Holocene shell midden on the coast of Los Vilos in north-central Chile (31°51′ S, South America) to better understand the spatial organization of short-term, small-sized hunter-gatherer campsites. The Dunas de Agua Amarilla (LV 007) site comprises 14 separate surf clam refuse deposits. Extensive stratigraphic excavations of the shell middens and the areas free of residue allowed interpretation of potential a…

  • Variability of 14 C reservoir age and air–sea flux of CO 2 in the Peru–Chile upwelling region during the past 12,000 years

Open Access•Matthieu Carré, Donald Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

The variability of radiocarbon marine reservoir age through time and space limits the accuracy of chronologies in marine paleo-environmental archives. We report here new radiocarbon reservoir ages (ΔR) from the central coast of Chile (~ 32°S) for the Holocene period and compare these values to existing reservoir age reconstructions from southern Peru and northern Chile. Late Holocene ΔR values show little variability from central Chile to Peru. P…

  • The Las Salinas palaeo-lagoon in the Sechura Desert (Peru): Evolution during the last two millennia

    Open Access•Aurélien Christol, Patrice Wuscher et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 4

The Sechura Desert provides a unique example of a vast palaeo-lagoon system on the Peruvian coast that was active during the first millennium AD. Reconstruction of coastal evolution is made possible by the good resolution of the sedimentary records of the Las Salinas Noroeste coastal plain. Evidence from morphostratigraphy and sedimentary facies indicates marked environmental diversity between the 3rd and the 8th centuries AD and a wide variabili…

  • Vegetation changes during the past 40,000 years in Central China from a long fossil record

Open Access•Jie Li, Zhuo Zheng et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Mid-Holocene mean climate in the south eastern Pacific and its influence on South America

Open Access•Matthieu Carré, Moufok Azzoug et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • An Early Holocene task camp (~8.5 ka cal BP) on the coast of the semi-arid north of Chile

Open Access•B Ballester Riesco, Benjamín Ballester et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2012•Cited by: 9•References: 20

According to current thinking, the peopling of South America involved a coastal as well as an inland exploitation. Here the authors describe a camp that may denote a transition between the two. As indicated by bifacial tools, the investigation shows that people began to move inland and hunt mammals around 8500 cal BP, perhaps in association with a change in the climate

  • Quebrada de los burros: Los primeros pescadores del litoral pacífico en el extremo sur peruano

Open Access•Daniele Lavallee, Michèle Julien et al.•ARTICLE•Chungara•2011•Cited by: 3

  • Insights into early Holocene hunter-gatherer mobility on the Peruvian Southern Coast from mollusk gathering seasonality

  • Strong El Niño events during the early Holocene: Stable isotope evidence from Peruvian sea shells

    Open Access•Matthieu Carré, Ilham Bentaleb et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 15•References: 2

Intrashell oxygen and carbon stable isotope profiles (δ 18 O,δ 13 C) were established for Mesodesma donacium shells from the preceramic archaeological site, Quebrada de los Burros in coastal southern Peru, to reconstruct the sea-surface temperature (SST) variations and to estimate changes of the El Niño-Southem Oscillation (ENSO) interannual variability from the early Holocene to the present. Very strong oxygen isotopic excursions attributed to E…

  • Radiocarbon Reservoir Age Variations in the South Peruvian Upwelling During the Holocene

Open Access•Michel Fontugne, Matthieu Carré et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Cited by: 12•References: 21

In Quebrada de los Burros in coastal southern Peru (Tacna department), human settlements containing shells and charcoal deposits have been excavated since 1995. The sea surface 14 C reservoir ages, estimated by calculating the difference of 14 C age between marine shells and terrestrial organic materials, exhibit high values during the lower and middle Holocene and decrease abruptly after 4000 cal BP. The increase of reservoir age at around 7000–…
