  • Inner and outer domains for Hawaiian causatives and nominalizers

    Open Access•David J Medeiros•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2025

Hawaiian valency-related morphology includes a complex set of surface forms which have traditionally been understood as causatives. Despite phonological similarity among this set of forms, these have traditionally been analyzed as separate morphemes. A closer view of their distribution and argument structure suggests an analysis in which these forms are allomorphs of one underlying, valency-increasing morpheme. A similar analysis of two nominaliz…

  • Ceiling Effects on Weight in Heavy NP Shift

    David J Medeiros, Paul Mains et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2021•References: 19

This squib tests theories of heavy NP shift that link constituent order to parsing. Our results indicate that increasing the weight of an object NP cannot make a heavy NP shift construction more acceptable than a comparison sentence in the canonical order, contra parsing-based theories. In addition, we examine acceptability as it relates to verb disposition. We find no significant differences between different subcategorizations, contrary to the …

  • Embedded Ancient Greek Imperatives

    Open Access•David J Medeiros•ARTICLE•Syntax•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 20

This paper presents an analysis of data in which imperative verbs appear in nonroot clauses, namely relative and finite verbal complement clauses. Although crosslinguistically rare, such embedding is well attested in languages such as Ancient Greek and Slovenian, and it is impossible in languages such as English. An analysis is presented in which rich imperative morphology is related to the possibility of embedding imperatives inCPcontexts, which…
