  • Artificial cranial deformation among Native American population according to metric and 2D coordinate data

    Open Access•T A Syutkina•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2025

This study examines the shape variability of artificially deformed crania using standard craniometric protocol and 2D coordinate data, and compares the effectiveness of these approaches. The analysis encompasses samples representing Native American populations, comprised of fronto-occipitally deformed crania. Procrustes coordinates were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical discriminant analysis (CDA); metric data were sub…

  • Cranial collection of the pre-Modern Bashkirs as a source in studies of ancient diseases

    Open Access•Vladimir V Kufterin, A I Nechvaloda et al.•ARTICLE•Уфимский археологический вестник•2024

The cranial collection, which represents the close to modern Bashkirs (18th – early 20th centu- ries), was used as an osteological evidence of the incidence of treponemal diseases (acquired syphilis) in this population. The collection was assembled by Rinat M.Yusupov, a prominent biological anthropologist and ethnographer, mainly in the 1970s and 1980s through the excavation of old Bashkir cemeteries; it is currently stored in the Department of E…

  • The Ciboney and the Taino in the Context of Craniometric Variation in Native American Population

    T A Syutkina•ARTICLE•Etnograficheskoe obozrenie•2024•References: 38

The article examines two cranial samples representing the pre-Columbian population of Cuba (the Ciboney and the Taino), in the general context of craniometric variation in the indigenous population of the American continent. Published craniometric data from various sources were used for comparison by the canonical discriminant analysis and calculation of pairwise squared Mahalanobis distances. The question is raised about the possibility of inclu…

  • A 1500-year retrospective of intergroup craniometric variability in Central Asian population (7th c. BC – 8th c. AD)

    Open Access•Vladimir V Kufterin, T A Syutkina et al.•ARTICLE•Moscow University Anthropology…•2023

Introduction. The paper revisits the intergroup craniometric variability in the Early Iron Age, Antiquity and Early medieval Central Asian population. Some new cranial materials are considered within the hierarchical system of the regional populations. Materials and methods. The comparison included 61 cranial samples from all historical and cultural regions of Central Asia with a total of 1100 crania. 12 standard measurements of the facial skelet…

  • Craniometric study of Central Asian population at the turn of the era

    T A Syutkina, Vladimir V Kufterin•ARTICLE•Etnograficheskoe obozrenie•2023•References: 11

The article aims to assess the method of individual visual typological definitions in biological anthropology and compare it with the results of multivariate statistical analysis based on the cranial materials coming mainly from the Yuezhi / Kushan period in Central Asia. The database contains information on 185 crania. We have established that sex has a highly significant effect on the variation of facial craniometric traits, while the effect of…

  • Paleopathological analysis of the cranial samples from Pre-Columbian Cuba

    Open Access•T A Syutkina•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The article presents a paleopathological analysis of two cranial samples from pre-Columbian Cuba: the Si-boney (also known as Archaic) sample consisting of 40 individuals and the Taíno sample composed of 27 indi-viduals. The Siboney are believed to have arrived to Cuba around 5000 years ago, and the Taíno inhabited the island since approximately 500 AD until decimation by the newcomers from the Old World. All the Taíno crania exhibit fronto-occip…

  • Intragroup analysis of new craniometric data from the ancient Panjakent nauses

    Open Access•Vladimir V Kufterin, Nadezhda A Dubova et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2022•References: 8

The article discusses new cranial materials excavated at the ancient Panjakent necropolis in 2003-2004. The crania were found in ossuary burials in nauses (small separate crypts) dating from the late VII to the early VIII centuries AD. The materials of the study include 19 crania of various preservation statuses (7 males, 11 females and one non-adult individual). The present study aims to compare the newly obtained cranial data with the al-ready …

  • Intragroup variation in the Pre-Columbian Cuba population

    Open Access•T A Syutkina, Taisiya Syutkina et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 27

The paper aims to study intragroup variation inside the two pre-Columbian Cuban populations: the aceramic Archaic and the ceramic Taino groups, based on their cranial morphology. The latter applied artificial cranial deformation to all its members, so the groups are referred to as “non-deformed” and “deformed” samples here. Studies across different disciplines suggest evidence of cultural and biological diversity inside the non-deformed group, wh…

  • Digital Copies for Anthropological Research

    Open Access•T A Syutkina, R M Galeev•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 21

In the last two decades, a large number of anthropological papers have been focused on digital copies of pa-laeoanthropological materials rather than original skeletal remains. According to some foreign scholars, "virtual anthropology" has taken a shape of a separate field of anthropological science. One of the main advantages of "virtual anthropology" is the possibility to develop databases, datasets, digital collections and catalogues accessi-b…
