Habsburg Empire to the Americas: Transculturalism in a Song About Sisi’s Assassination
Most studies of diasporic vernacular singing focus on song lyrics and emphasize the preservation of pre-emigration repertoire. In this two-article study, we focus in detail on one narrative song to illustrate the complexity of transculturation in Ukrainian-Canadian vernacular singing. Empress Elisabeth of the Habsburgs was assassinated in 1898, and this event was commemorated in a song in Ukrainian. The song has been documented over a wide territ…

Key Conceptual Threads in Ukrainian Canadian Ethnography
Ukrainian ethnography has been a large, diffuse field of activity in Canada, with several identifiable threads. The field’s significance has been primarily cumulative rather than evident in individual field-changing works. Robert Klymasz’s PhD dissertation (“Ukrainian Folklore in Canada,” 1971) on continuity and change in Ukrainian Canadian culture is the main exception. Some studies have dealt with traditional culture in Ukraine, but the mainstr…

Ethnochoreologists are now more open to the study of folk dance revival groups, though they still lack common terminology or conceptual frameworks. Based upon the motivations and priorities of their participants, dance groups can be identified as “Enjoyers,” “Preservers,” “Presenters,” “Creators,” or perhaps “All-stars.” Several examples show how each of these strategies may impact on the organizational structures, dance forms and other aspects o…

New Ethnicity and Ukrainian Canadian Social Dances
The participatory dance repertoire of rural Ukrainian Canadians reveals several patterns of continuity and change. A few dances appear to have become increasingly associated over time with Ukrainian ethnicity. Interestingly, these are exactly the dances whose forms underwent the greatest mutations in Canada. The concept of "new ethnicity" provides an explanation
Once Again: "On the Concept of "Second Existence Folk Dance
Participatory and Presentational Dance as Ethnochoreological Categories
Typologies are tools to help us understand the range of observed phenomena. Many typological categories are useful in dance research, contrasting various features in the data. Based on the identity of the recipient of the danced message, four types of dance can be identified: reflexive, participatory, sacred, and presentational. The conceptual axis between participatory and presentational dance is proposed as potentially significant for ethnochor…
