  • Diachrony and Diachronica

    Open Access•Claire Bowern, D Goldstein et al.•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2023

In this second set of contributions on the 40th anniversary of Diachronica, seven historical linguists provide perspectives on the current state of the field and aims for the future. While the authors in issue 40.4 focused on the ideas that have structured the field – the actuation problem, the relationship between synchrony and diachrony, and how we do our work – this current set of contributions focus on method: what we do, how and why we do it…

  • Liquid polarity, positional contrast, and diachronic change

    Open Access•Ranjan Sen, Nicholas Zair•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2022

Apparently disparate sound changes in Latin, involving both vowels and consonants but sensitive to /r/, can be explained by reconstructing a positional clear/dark contrast in /r/, motivated by the seldom-mentioned “liquid polarity” effect. Examining these diachronic processes together allows us to see a larger picture, providing evidence for the reconstruction of successive past synchronic states. Latin /r/ mirrored the behaviour of Latin /l/ up …

  • Effect of yoga on bronchial asthma

Open Access•Sanjeev Satpathy, Sibasish Patro et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Health…•2022

Introduction-Asthma is a disease affecting the lungs causing airway obstruction, dyspnoea and cough with restlessness. Patients use multiple medications to control their symptoms but still, they are not relieved. Yoga has been used as a complementary therapy but many people fail to use it because of difficulty in performing it. This study was done with the aim to use four simple yoga exercises to find if any reduction in symptoms and benefits to …

  • En[dj]uring [ʧ]unes or ma[tj]ure [ʤ]ukes? Yod-coalescence and yod-dropping in the Eighteenth-Century English Phonology Database

Open Access•Joan C Beal, Ranjan Sen et al.•ARTICLE•English Language and Linguistics•2020

    Yod-coalescence involving alveolar consonants before Late Modern English /uː/ from earlier /iu > juː/ is still variable and diffusing in Present-day English. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary ( OED ) gives both (/tj dj/) and (/ʧ ʤ/) British English pronunciations for tune (/tjuːn/, /tʃuːn/), mature (/mǝˈtjʊǝ/, /mǝˈʧʊǝ/), duke (/djuːk/, /dʒuːk/) and endure (/ᵻnˈdjʊə/, /ɛnˈdjʊə/, /ᵻnˈdʒʊə/, /ɛnˈdʒʊə/, /ᵻnˈdjɔː/, /ɛnˈdjɔː/, /ᵻnˈdʒɔː/, /ɛnˈd…

  • Special issue on studies in Late Modern English historical phonology using the Eighteenth-Century English Phonology Database (Ecep)

Open Access•Joan C Beal, Ranjan Sen et al.•ARTICLE•English Language and Linguistics•2020

Since Charles Jones referred to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as the ‘Cinderellas of English historical linguistic study’ (1989: 279), there has been a great deal of progress in research on this period, but, as Beal (2012: 22) points out, much of this has been in the fields of syntax, morphology, lexis, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and the normative tradition. Beal argues that the availability of corpora of Late Modern English texts has…

  • Syllable and Segment in Latin

Ranjan Sen•BOOK•Syllable and Segment in Latin•2015

The role of synchronic phonological structure in guiding sound change is much debated, with a reductionist view claiming that the demands of speech production and perception alone motivate and constrain phonological development. We evaluate the role of syllable structure in five long-standing problems in Latin historical phonology, selected due to their apparent sensitivity to this structural unit: clear and dark /l/, inverse compensatory lengthe…

  • Reconstructing phonological change

    Open Access•Ranjan Sen•ARTICLE•Phonology•2012

During the fixed initial-stress period of Latin (sixth to fifth centuries BC), internal open syllable vowels were totally neutralised, usually raising to /i/ (*per.fa.ki.oː> perficiō ‘I complete’), whereas in closed syllables /a/ was raised to /e/, but the other vowels remained distinct (*per.fak.tos> perfectus ‘completed’). Miller (1972) explains closed syllable resistance by positing internal secondary stress on closed syllables. However, evide…
