Fact and Artifact: Evidence Bearing on Disengagement Theory from the Duke Geriatrics Project
Themes and Issues in Sociological Theories of Human Aging
A review of the current status of sociological theory in regard to human aging indicates some important and promising developments. The confirmation status of theory in social gerontology is improving; the logical structure of its propositions and arguments is being elaborated in a cumulative fashion; the determinancy of predictions based on theory is better; and social gerontological theory is increasingly articulated with general sociological t…

Research as a Public Enterprise: Social Science Data on Ageing in the Public Domain
A revolution is occurring in information exchange among gerontologists worldwide. For research investigators the increasingly easy accessibility of public use datasets promises to facilitate both research training and useful exchange of evidence. A brief history of the development of public use datasets for research in ageing is provided, and datasets of particular interest are described. While the illustrations focus on experience in the United …

Speaking of Life: Horizons of Meaning for Nursing Home Residents
In one of his earlier books, Living and Dying at Murray Manor, author availed himself of ethnographic techniques to explore the experience of life in a nursing home. This volume extends that exploration to an assessment of the quality of long-term care provided to residents of nursing homes, and of the resulting quality of lives. Taking a bottom-up rather than a top-down view, Gubrium presents these qualities in the voices of residents themselves…
Social and Behavioural Research on Ageing: An Agenda for the United States
In this commentary on recent planning for multidisciplinary research on ageing in the United States, we argue that Sir Douglas Black's pessimistic conclusion about the irrelevance of such planning is off the mark. Created by the U.S. Congress in 1975, the National Institute on Ageing (NIA) was a novelty in the National Institutes of Health. NIA was mandated to have a broadly multidisciplinary research agenda that included behavioural and social s…

Dynamics of functional impairment in late adulthood
Race, Aging, and Functional Health
This article presents evidence of a Black/White crossover in functional health. Its existence supports the hypothesis, based on selective survival, that older members of socially disadvantaged populations are relatively more physiologically robust and thus exhibit relatively favorable functional capacities. Longitudinal data on 5,150 persons 70 years of age and older shows that within young-old age groups, Blacks are more likely to experience fun…

The quality and quantity of social support: Stroke recovery as psycho-social transition
The impact of various types and amounts of social support is examined in the context of recovery from first stroke. We conceptualize the rehabilitation process as a psychosocial transition. In a longitudinal design, 44 patients were followed for 6 months following first stroke. Growth-curve analysis (repeated measures MANOVA) was utilized to examine the impact of three types of social support on changes in functional status during recovery. While…
Trajectories of Functional Impairment in Later Life
Functional impairment trajectories in late adulthood over a decade are characterized using the Longitudinal Retirement History Study (LRHS) data set. Non-linear patterns of age-related increase in impairment are documented with longitudinal data. Subsets of panelists from the initial large, nationally representative probability sample of employed males and unmarried employed females (N = 11,000) also exhibit differential non-linear trajectories o…

Assessment of Functional Status in a Program Evaluation and Resource Allocation Model
Concern about the efficiency and effectiveness of increasingly costly health and welfare services for older persons stimulates interest in systematic evaluation of alterna tive programs. While a single, optimal system for program evaluation and resource allocation does not exist, a strategy developed at Duke University is promising. This strategy, which meets the conditions of a quasi-experiment, has three elements: (1) a reliable, valid procedur…
