The Peruvian Amazon Co: Credit and Debt in the Putumayo “Wild Rubber” Business
In this article, I trace the credit and debt practices of a company incorporated in the UK to extract “wild rubber” in the Amazon. Based on reports by Sir Roger Casement, an officer of the British diplomatic service, I present a general description of the organization of the Peruvian Amazon Co., whose operation did not depend on investment in technology or infrastructure but, rather, on the flow of credit in the form of merchandise. I will discus…

The future of research monographs: An international set of perspectives
This Forum makes four points. First, it expands our knowledge on the writing and publishing of research monographs in different countries and so it moves beyond accounts which generalize from the UK experience. Second, the Forum considers international differences in the ways in which the assessment of academic performances affects the writing and publishing of geography research monographs. Third, it considers the ways in which structural change…

The purpose of this article is to illustrate the experience of the research group that worked in Ciudad Perdida (Magdalena, Colombia) between 1979 and 1983 , and to discuss the production of anthropological knowledge as a spatial practice. The group’s itinerary begins in an archaeological site and ends with the creation of an NGO and the invention of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta as a planning region. Through the reconstruction of the journey,…

Malocas and barracones. Tradition, biodiversity, and participation in the Colombian Amazon
This article offers an analysis of the assumptions and hypotheses that guide the resolve of an NGO in the Colombian Amazon to strengthen indigenous autonomy and the traditional forms of environmental management, thereby seeking to guarantee preservation of the region's biodiversity. An examination of the practices stemming from these postulates reveals the paradox of the action of projects and programmes which, in their eagerness to put tradition…
