The Domain of Formal Matching in Sluicing
This article is concerned with the role of syntax in the licensing of sluicing in English. It amends and provides new support for a proposal made by Rudin (2019) in which syntax plays a crucial but circumscribed role: crucial in that antecedents are required; circumscribed in that matching with an antecedent holds only with respect to a proper subpart of the elided clause-its argumental core
Same and different are additive presupposition triggers
We propose an account of interpretive effects involving same and different , relying on two claims: the first is that same and different are able to take scope, and the second is that they are presuppositional. On this account, same and different are decomposed into two parts: an additive operator TOO and a (non-)identity predicate. We argue that this account provides a more parsimonious account of well-known properties of same and different , su…
The Santa Cruz sluicing data set
This report describes a new research resource: a searchable database of 4,700 naturally occurring instances of sluicing in English, annotated so as to shed light on the questions that have shaped research on ellipsis since the 1960s. The paper describes the data set and how it can be obtained, how it was constructed, how it is organized, and how it can be queried. It also highlights some initial empirical findings, first describing general charac…
Introduction
Recent decades of research in linguistics have seen a shift towards empirical methods and an increased use of data from corpora as a basis for making claims about language (Sampson 2005). This trend has made its mark on research on the Nordic languages also, and the current special issue aims to show some of the breadth of research in this field. The issue is in its entirety devoted to contributions that use the methodology of corpus linguistics …
Re-binding and the Derivation of Parallelism Domains
Ellipsis and the Structure of Discourse
I propose that the matching condition on ellipsis be applied in accordance with discourse structure. I consider two versions of this matching condition, and show that both versions have empirical limitations that are remedied by the discourse structure requirement. The eect of this condition can be clearly observed in examples involving multiple ellipsis, where discourse structure plays a key role in determining possible readings.
Discourse parallelism, ellipsis, and ambiguity
In this paper we combine a simple recovery mechanism for ellipsis with a general, discourse account of parallelism to account for a variety of phenomena concerning ellipsis, including Sag's wide scope puzzle and complex examples concerning sloppy identity. Our recovery mechanism requires an identity of logical structure between the recovered material and antecedent in the ellipsis. The recovered material and the antecedent are then interpreted in…
