Extended Families and the Control of Hypertension in Central Mississippi
In order to evaluate the beneficial support functions of multigenerational extended families, a research and demonstration effort was developed to focus on the management of a chronic disease, hypertension. Conducted in central Mississippi, high blood pressure management self‐help groups were established in 4 white and 9 black extended families. An influential member of each family was trained to monitor the blood pressures of all family hyperten…
Ethnicity and Medical Care
Ethnicity and Medical Care equips health professionals with the ethnographic data they need to deliver better health care within American communities of urban blacks, Chinese, Haitians, Italians, Mexicans, Navajos, and Puerto Ricans. Each chapter, dealing in turn with one of these seven American subcultures, reviews the available demographic and epidemiological data and examines sociocultural influences on each major phase of illness. Systems Analysis: A Promising Focus for Biosocial Research
There is evidence that systems analysis has advanced sufficiently to have major theoretical and practical possibilities for anthropology. This paper presents support for this suggestion from studies of populations in two areas of the US: a Black migrant group in Mississippi and a Midwestern urban group. Some problems and potential applications of systems research are discussed.

Explorations in Afro-American Ethnohistory
Afro-American ethnohistory is viewed as an essential aspect of New World ethnohistory. It is important for the understanding of other interacting societies, especially Native American populations in tropical and subtropical lowlands. And it is highly significant in its own right, both in relation to the persistence of people and traditions under great stress, and in regard to Maroon and other emergent societies. Even as much as in the study of Na…
Northeast Asia in Prehistory
The Soviet and the Savage [and Comments and Replies]
Social anthropology, in the West and in Russia, sprang in part from an interest in the evolution of mankind: "primitive" society was relevant as a kind of surrogate time-machine, as evidence about the earlier "stages" in the development of human society. But the British and Russian traditions went in markedly different directions in the 20th century. Under the impact of the Malinowskian revolution, social anthropology in Britain acquired a marked…

The Collapse of Classic Maya Civilization in the Southern Lowlands: A Symposium Summary Statement
A review of evidence on the cultural, economic, and demographic collapses in the Maya southern lowlands after 790 A.D. has led to new theories of the history and causes of these events. Intense population growth, rising socio-political competition between centers, sharpening class divisions, and nascent militarism generated difficult problems for the conservative theocracies of the Maya polity. These problems were intensified by military and econ…

Minerals-A Key to Soviet Power
Economic Regionalization in the Soviet Union
D vESPITE the profound historical and politico-economic differences between the United States and the Soviet Union, the trends in the economic regionalization of the two countries have been surprisingly similar. Both have had a stable core area that has persisted in importance. In both, increasing economic decentralization, reduction of regional inequalities, and displacement of economic activity from agricultural to mineral producing areas have …
