  • Practice-Level Spending Variation for Radiation Treatment Episodes Among Older Adults With Cancer

Open Access•Miranda B Lam, Mary Beth Landrum et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2025

In this cross-sectional study, there was substantial variation in practice-level radiation spending and number of fractions for older patients with cancer undergoing radiation treatment both within and across health care markets. This practice-level variation suggests that there may be opportunities for savings under population-based payment models

  • Care Experiences and Visit Use of Physician and Nonphysician Medicare Patients

    Open Access•Annabel Z Wang, J Michael McWilliams•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2023

This cross-sectional study compares care experiences and outpatient visit use between physician-patients and nonphysician-patients

  • Opportunities for Savings in Risk Arrangements for Oncologic Care

    Open Access•Bruce E Landon, Miranda B Lam et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2023

However, mandating public reporting was not associated with improved patient experiences. These findings support recommendations to end optional measures in the MIPS but also suggest that public reporting on mandated …

  • Preserving and Promoting Competition in the Post–Coronavirus Disease 2019 Healthcare Delivery System

    Open Access•Vinay K Rathi, J Michael McWilliams et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2020

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis has created unprecedented financial strain for health care organizations in the United States. During the early months of the pandemic, nearly all institutions had to reduce or suspend nonessential services to bolster health system capacity, preserve supplies, and minimize viral transmission. While many organizations are now resuming services as restrictions are eased, the volume of services is unlik…

  • Diffusion of Bevacizumab Across Oncology Practices

    Nancy L Keating, Haiden A Huskamp et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2018•References: 41

BACKGROUND: Technological advances can improve care and outcomes but are a primary driver of health care spending growth. Understanding diffusion and use of new oncology therapies is important, given substantial increases in prices and spending on such treatments. OBJECTIVES: Examine diffusion of bevacizumab, a novel (in 2004) and high-priced biologic cancer therapy, among US oncology practices during 2005-2012 and assess variation in use across …
