  • Engineering the filial self. Negotiating the moral construction of filial piety at different government levels in China

    Open Access•Marius Meinhof, Yiming Zhang•ARTICLE•Critical Social Policy•2024•References: 9

This article draws on discourse analysis of central and local government texts alongside ethnographic fieldwork conducted in China to depict the negotiation and implementation of filial piety ( xiao ), as advocated in the moral construction framework, across different levels of government in China. We show how heterogeneous actors within the Chinese state fill the vague framework of the discourse on filial piety with their concerns and visions of…

  • Die Kolonialität der Moderne

    Marius Meinhof•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Soziologie•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 18

This is notable because these discourses adapt a hierarchy of modernity from colonial discourses and they refer to colonial experiences in order to prove that a backward China has to change urgently. The art…

  • The other Chinese

    Junchen Yan, Marius Meinhof•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 48

This paper draws on an in-depth case study of narrative identity work to explore heuristically the role of host country nationals in the reproduction of orientalist discourses in multinational corporations (MNCs). Based on this analysis, it presents an identity strategy termed the other Chinese. The other Chinese claims to be in-between the West, that is constructed as superior modern and rational, and China, that is constructed as backwards and …
