The Effects of Verbal Stimuli on Behavioral Equilibrium
Disequilibrium as Determinant of Reinforcement and Punishment Effects
Great ape origins of personality maturation and sex differences
Human personality development evinces increased emotional stability, prosocial tendencies, and responsibility. One hypothesis offered to explain this pattern is Social-Investment Theory, which posits that culturally defined social roles, including marriage and employment, are responsible for the increased maturity. Alternatively, Five-Factor Theory emphasizes the role of biological factors, such as those governing physical development, which may …
Expressing religious identities in the workplace
Responding to Jackson and Joshi’s (2011) call for specific models of the effects of particular diversity types and against the backdrop of the rising desire for the public expression of religious identities in the workplace (Hicks, 2003), we develop a framework that systematically explores when and how the expression of diverse religious identities induces relational conflicts in organizational units. In developing this framework, we integrate th…
Identifying personality from the static, nonexpressive face in humans and chimpanzees
Assessing chimpanzee personality and subjective well‐being in Japan
We tested whether the cultural background of raters influenced ratings of chimpanzee personality. Our study involved comparing personality and subjective well‐being ratings of 146 chimpanzees in Japan that were housed in zoos, research institutes, and a retirement sanctuary to ratings of chimpanzees in US and Australian zoos. Personality ratings were made on a translated and expanded version of a questionnaire used to rate chimpanzees in the US a…
Determinants of religious expression in the workplace
With the importance of religion to many individuals and the legal protections present in various countries, religious expression in the workplace is a phenomenon worthy of greater research and understanding. This study examined several potential antecedents of religious expression in the workplace. Results from a sample of employed individuals suggest that both individual and organisational factors, including individual religiosity, company cultu…
Chimpanzee facial symmetry
This paper reports a study of fitness indicator theory in chimpanzees. First, it establishes a theoretical perspective for the study of fitness indicator theory and the relationships among indicators of fitness in humans and other animals. Second, it describes a methodology for assessing facial fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in a sample ( N = 21) of zoo chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ). Third, associations among chimpanzee facial FA and health are des…
A cross‐setting study of chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes ) personality structure and development
This study addressed whether personality ratings using a 43 adjective questionnaire based on the Five‐Factor Model generalized from a sample of 202 zoo‐housed chimpanzees to a sample of 175 chimpanzees housed in Yerkes National Primate Research Center. Mean interrater reliabilities of adjectival ratings were lower for the chimpanzees housed in Yerkes. In addition, rank order of the interrater reliabilities of items differed between settings. To c…

Personality and subjective well-being in orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abelii)
Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abelii) are semisolitary apes and, among the great apes, the most distantly related to humans. Raters assessed 152 orangutans on 48 personality descriptors; 140 of these orangutans were also rated on a subjective well-being questionnaire. Principal-components analysis yielded 5 reliable personality factors: Extraversion, Dominance, Neuroticism, Agreeableness, and Intellect. The authors found no factor analogou…
A Chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes ) Analogue of Cross‐National Generalization of Personality Structure
Six personality factors, including five resembling the human Big Five, had previously been identified in a separate group of zoo‐housed chimpanzees. Comparability of chimpanzee personality factor structure was examined in two highly contrasting habitats: zoos and a large African sanctuary. Questionnaires for the zoo chimpanzees were in English, while most for the chimpanzees in the sanctuary were in French. Differences between the two settings we…

The measurement of religiosity and spirituality
After a history of mostly ambivalence and neglect, organization‐focused research has shown a steadily growing interest in religiosity and spirituality over the past decade. While organizational scholars have been slower to incorporate religion and spirituality into their research, psychologists have progressed enough to have a well‐developed specialty area, the psychology of religion. This paper delves into the psychology of religion literature b…

The Structure of Personality Differences is not Uniquely Human
Subjective well-being is heritable and genetically correlated with dominance in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)
The hypothesis that subjective well-being (SWB) is heritable and genetically correlated with Dominance was tested using 128 zoo chimpanzees. Dominance was a chimpanzee-specific personality factor including items reflecting Extraversion and low Neuroticism. SWB was measured with a 4-item scale. The best behavior genetic model included additive genetic and nonshared environmental effects for SWB and Dominance, marginal matemal effects for SWB, a hi…
The Five-Factor Model plus Dominance in Chimpanzee Personality
Laterality in spontaneous motor activity of chimpanzees and squirrel monkeys
Varieties of nonmanipulative motor responses were observed in chimpanzees and squirrel monkeys. Chimpanzees displayed a right hand preference for touching their inanimate environments but used their right and left hands equally for touching their faces and their bodies. The latter result was not consistent with previous reports of a left hand preference for face touching in apes. The right hand preference for environmental touching was stronger i…
Geochelone in Illinois and the Illinoian-Sangamonian Vegetation of the Type Region
An investigation of Illinoian- and Sangamonian-age deposits in the type region for both Pleistocene stages in central Illinois has yielded a palynological record spanning the Illinoian-year during at least the portion of the Sangamonian represented. Sangamonian boundary associated with an interglacial fauna containing Geochelone crassiscutata . The pollen indicates a shift from high Picea and Pinus to deciduous trees, followed by grass and herbac…
Repeated separations of 2‐year‐old squirrel monkeys from familiar mother surrogates
Six squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus ) during their first year of life were isolated and repeatedly separated from cloth mother surrogates. Subsequently, they were returned to the colony for 1 year and received visual access to normally reared squirrel monkeys. At 2 years of age, the surrogates were reintroduced to the monkeys under conditions identical to those of their first year through cycles of separation and reunion of the surrogate. The…

Pollen Analysis of Fossil Packrat Middens from the Sonoran Desert
Pollen contained in 22 fossil packrat middens from the Sonoran Desert provides a complementary, but differing, view of the paleoenvironment from that derived by analysis of the associated plant macrofossils. The regional component of the pollen data is in sharp contrast to the locally oriented macrofossils. A total of 84 macrofossil taxa and 47 pollen taxa were identified; only 18 taxa were common to both. The low Index of Similarity, 0.4, indica…

Pollen Preservation and Archaeology in Eastern North America
The recovery of pollen from archaeological sites in Eastern North A merica has not been as successful as it has been in the western part of the continent. The depositional environment of eastern archaeological sites is generally unfavorable for pollen preservation and archaeologists have failed to search out special situations in which pollen may be preserved. At the Rhoads site, a Proto-Historic Indian village in central Illinois, abundant polle…

Modern pollen in the Grand Canyon, Arizona
Two surface pollen transects were collected from the Grand Canyon, Arizona. One transect consisted of 22 samples collected at river level through the inner gorge, a river distance of 362 km; the other went from the South Rim to the North Rim across the canyon and comprised 25 samples. Both transects show close agreement between local vegetation and modern pollen rain despite large quantities of arboreal pollen drifting into the canyon from upper …

A Holocene Vegetation Record from the Mississippi River Valley, Southeastern Missouri
Pollen preserved in a peat deposit from a large swamp, the Old Field in the Mississippi River Valley near Advance, Missouri, records radiocarbon-dated vegetation changes between 9000 and about 3000 years ago. The principal feature of both the percentage and influx pollen diagrams is the replacement of arboreal pollen, primarily Quercus, Fraxinus , and Cephalanthus , with Gramineae and NAP between 8700 and 5000 years BP. This vegetation shift is i…
