Troubled and Troublesome Teenagers
In neoliberal and associated managerial times, social work in the UK is dominated by the speedy completion of bureaucracy to ration services and assess/manage risk. Concerning children and families, unless there are child protection issues little help or support is provided with parents/carers often told to change their behaviour/lifestyle or face the possibility of losing their children to adoption. To counteract this, we argue for critical and …

Effects of gender harassment on science popularization behaviors
In this pilot study, we used a mixed methods online survey to ask science popularizers how gender harassment influences the way they communicate science to the public. Popularizers reported that gender harassment caused the science popularization field to increasingly strive for gender inclusivity in the creation of content. However, harassment made female popularizers feel they must emphasize their legitimacy, quite conscious of their clothing c…
Knowledge mobilisation
This debate argues that it is time that knowledge mobilisation or exchange is adopted as a permanent part of academic, policy and practice endeavours, especially in the area of caregiving. Seven-year research on knowledge mobilisation by the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly clearly shows that knowledge mobilisation affects the behaviour of professionals to provide better service to the betterment of older adults
A social ecological, relationship-based strategy for parent involvement
Purpose – Most schools struggle to get busy and stressed parents to come repeatedly to the school building for events. At primary schools, especially those with pupils living in low-income communities or with many immigrants, involving parents to come at all is seen as a challenge. The purpose of this paper is to present a social ecological strategy of using the school building as a site for families to gather and for community networks to grow b…

Engaging Young Parents and Their Families in a Multi-family Group Work Intervention
This article offers a practice account of the pilot of an inclusive, community based, multi-family group intervention for young mothers and fathers, their children and extended family. Adapting this North American social work intervention, which is delivered by service user staff members, social work and health professionals, in a UK city demonstrated that young parents and their extended families could be engaged onto a programme designed to enh…

To Love-To Live
From the residue of meaning, an ensemble of shadows. From the glint of souvenir, pliable impressions. In this paper, we work a poetics of encounter, of being, keeping, homage, of paying homage to fragility, to object and to interspecies-ways are found to engage motion from within and around co-extensive bodies. With the consolation of images, we follow the terse rhythms of routine and street where dwelling is a case of affective dissent. Zones of…
Cultural adaptation of an evidence‐based parenting programme with elders from South East Asia in the US
Purpose – Without some flexibility, replications of manualised evidence‐based programmes (EBP) may not achieve predictable outcomes due to differences in cultural priorities. In this case study, Families and Schools Together (FAST) was co‐produced with elders from a community of Hmong political refugees in the US Mid‐West. The paper aims to describe and evaluate the process of culturally adapting and implementing this universal parenting programm…
Examining Evictions through a Life-Course Lens
Evictions, as markers of housing instability, call attention to the “housing affordability crisis.” The purpose of this research was to examine the individual and structural circumstances that contributed to eviction transitions in housing careers across the life course, how housing trajectories spiralled into homelessness, and how the confluence of social policies operated during these transitions. Qualitative interviews indicated that transitio…
Theorising about ageing, family and immigration
This article critically reviews the ways in which theories in social gerontology have been used to explain the influence of ethnicity and immigration on older adults. The purpose of this cursory examination is to explore how these theories can be used for further theory advancement without serious modifications to existing theories. Current theories do not have the capacity to capture the effects of immigration at the structural level and its lin…
An evaluation of a groupwork intervention for teenage mothers and their families
This paper describes the implementation of a specific, community‐based, multi‐family group (MFG) intervention strategy (Families and Schools Together [FAST] babies) aimed at improving the outcomes for infants of teenage mothers in 11 Canadian communities. The aims of this social work group intervention were (1) to engage the teenage mothers into a socially inclusive experience that might challenge the social disapproval they often experience, (2)…

Poor health and retirement income
Using the 1994 Canadian General Social Survey, this study examines the economic effects of retiring because of poor health. The …

This thorough investigation enables her to provide empirical refutation of recent radical, feminist, and environmentalist critiques that assert that the social sciences…
