Pronunciation and Linguistic Bias in Interviewing Arabic Instructors
The present qualitative study reports on a sample of six Arabic instructors (out of 30) who were asked to modify/correct their pronunciation of Arabic as it was considered "unsuitable" by members of the recruitment committee. Almost half the instructors believed that the corrections involved linguistic bias. Providing the first extended analysis of Audre Lorde’s critique of the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada, this essay argues that Lorde’s critique models a form of anti-imperial consciousness that is still morally and politically instructive. A rural medieval settlement in Roxburghshire
Few medieval rural settlements have been identified or excavated in Scotland.The site at Springwood Park survived in a ploughed field and was identified by scatters of medieval pottery.Excavation revealed only part of the settlement, a row of buildings on a river terrace which was occupied from the late 12th to the 14th century.Three main periods were identified, followed by levelling and abandonment.The earliest period featured post-set structur…

On the 29 July 1984 archaeologists engaged in a survey of the later Prehistoric and Romano-British landscape around Holme-on-Spalding Moor in East Yorkshire visited land at Hasholme which was being drained. Examination of the drainage works led to the discovery of fragments of a substantial logboat amongst timbers which had been removed from the fenland by the contractors after fouling their mole drainer. Two ovariectomized female rhesus monkeys treated year‐round with estradiol‐filled capsules were used in hour‐long behavioral tests with male rhesus monkeys both in and out of the normal breeding season.
