  • Shifting Frames

Open Access•Juliana Jaramillo Jaramillo, Juliana Jaramillo et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2026

Throughout the twenty-first century, anti-gender activism in Colombia and across Latin America has demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt and reinvent itself. This article examines a recent transformation in its discursive strategies: the rise of anti-woke and anti-progre as new collective action frames for opposing sexual and reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and a broader spectrum of progressive policies. Drawing on an analysis of 128 act…

  • Tweeting Antagonism

Open Access•Laura Gamboa, Sandra Botero et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2024

Polarizing rhetoric and negative tone are thought to generate more attention on social media. We seek to describe and analyze how presidential candidates in Colombia's 2022 election deployed (de)polarizing rhetoric and tone, around what topics, and with what effects. We analyze the tweets (and corresponding engagement) of the four leading candidates during the campaign. Tone behaves as expected. Negatively worded tweets receive overall more likes…

  • Courts that Matter

    Open Access•Sandra Botero•BOOK•Courts That Matter•2023

In Courts that Matter, Sandra Botero tackles a crucial question: Can courts advance socioeconomic rights? Using a rigorous comparative study of the impact of socioeconomic rights rulings in Colombia and Argentina, Botero argues that such decisions can be significantly impactful when courts deploy certain monitoring mechanisms and when legally empowered organizations in civil society are engaged in the outcome. The book includes case studies of la…

  • Colombia 2022

Open Access•Sandra Botero, Laura Gamboa•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2021

  • Free Expression and Judicial Power in Colombia, India, and South Africa

    Open Access•Sandra Botero, Rachel Ellett et al.•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 12

The growth of judicial power globally has renewed scholarly debates about who benefits from increased judicial authority. Using original data, we examine the full universe of constitutional free expression decisions issued by three apex courts—in Colombia, India, and South Africa—across three categories of disputes that feature a diverse array of rights claimants. By so doing, we shed light on the limits of elite-driven accounts of judicial empow…

  • Trust in Colombia’s Justicia Especial Para La Paz

    Open Access•Sandra Botero•ARTICLE•Journal of Politics in Latin…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Research on the determinants of institutional trust in courts that are part of transitional justice frameworks is scarce. This article relies on experimental evidence to explore whether features of the case and the ruling play a role in citizens’ attitudes towards the Justicia Especial para la Paz, Colombia’s transitional justice tribunal. I evaluate whether the profile of the accused and whether or not he is sentenced to the most lenient of rest…

    Open Access•Sandra Botero•ARTICLE•Revista de ciencia política•2017•Cited by: 12

Primero, resal…

  • Says Who? An Experiment on Allegations of Corruption and Credibility of Sources

Open Access•Sandra Botero, Rodrigo Castro Cornejo et al.•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•2015•Cited by: 42•References: 45

To hold politicians accountable for corrupt practices, voters must rely on reports from third parties and view these accusation sources as credible. We conducted a survey experiment varying sources for corruption accusations and measuring citizens’ evaluations of political candidates in Colombia. Consistent with prior surveys, we find that respondents trust newspapers more than the judiciary or nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Corruption acc…
