  • Fifty Years of McCall Glacier Research

Open Access•Gunter Weller, Matt Nolan et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

McCall Glacier, located in the eastern Brooks Range of northern Alaska (Fig. 1), has the longest and most com-plete history of scientific research of any glacier in the U.S. Arctic. Spanning the period from the International

  • A Century of Climate Change for Fairbanks, Alaska

    Open Access•Gerd Wendler, Martha Shulski•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

Climatological observations are available for Fairbanks, Interior Alaska, for up to 100 years. This is a unique data set for Alaska, insofar as it is of relatively high quality and without major breaks. Applying the best linear fit, we conclude that the mean annual temperature rose from -3.6°C to -2.2°C over the century, an increase of 1.4°C (compared to 0.8°C worldwide). This comparison clearly demonstrates the well-known amplification or temper…

  • Some Observations of Alaskan Glacier Winds in Midsummer

    Open Access•N A Streten, Gerd Wendler•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1968

Discusses 21 June-12 July observations at Castner Glacier in the Alaska Range and 16 July-11 Aug 1967 at Worthington Glacier in the Chugach Range. The purpose was to study the frequency and diurnal variation of glacier winds and differences due to location and exposure. In both cases max windspeed occurs slightly before sunrise and in the mid-afternoon. In the absence of a daytime glacier wind at Castner, a regular night downslope circulation is …
