Vaccination and the refugee camp: Exercising the free choice of vaccination from an abject position in Germany and Greece
This article explores the public discourses that accompany vaccination campaigns targeted at the refugees in the context of the European refugee/migrant crisis. The argument is that such campaigns are embedded in the provision of humanitarian healthcare and yet connect the refugees with the citizenry in the host countries in that both populations are deemed to share the universal need to vaccines and the right to accept or deny them. But if immun…

Beyond the ‘Balkan route’, or Why Southeastern Europe Remains a Core Issue for Europe: A Discussion among Andrea Despot, Hannes Grandits, Wolfgang Höpken, Dušan Reljić, Gabriella Schubert, and Sevasti…
On the initiative of the Balkanologenverband e. V . (Association of Balkanologists), on 22 June 2016, the day before the ‘Brexit’ referendum, various experts on southeast European history and politics at Humboldt University in Berlin discussed the effects of the current crises on Europe’s southeastern periphery. In response to the dramatic events of the refugee crisis of 2015 the region oscillated between alienation from and rapprochement towards…
Rights' in the grey area: Undocumented border crossers on Lesvos
The Aegean island of Lesvos is one of the gateways that refugees and undocumented border crossers use for entering European territory. This study deals with two phenomena related to border crossings on Lesvos: first, the efforts of those arriving to be placed in the status of 'administrative detention' in order to receive an expulsion order and then be able to continue their journey; and, second, the activity of the local solidarity network, whic…
"The "strong nucleus of the Greek race
This article deals with the theory of the "strong nucleus of the Greek race" elaborated by the Greek physical anthropologist Ioannis Koumaris (1879-1970), who headed all academic anthropological institutions in Greece between 1915 and 1970. According to this theory human groups were in a state of "fluid constancy," meaning that the "proper" nucleus of the predominant race always persisted in a stable form despite miscegenation, and was hence capa…
Blood and Homeland: Eugenics and Racial Nationalism in Central and Southeast Europe, 1900-1940
The history of eugenics and racial nationalism in Central and Southeast Europe is a neglected topic of analysis in contemporary scholarship. The 20 essays in this volume, written by distinguished scholars of eugenics and fascism alongside a new generation of scholars, excavate the hitherto unknown eugenics movements in Central and Southeast Europe, including Austria and Germany. Eugenics and racial nationalism are topics that have constantly been…
Balkan Egyptians and Gypsy/Roma Discourse
Since the 1990s, yet another entity has emerged among the wide range of groups and minorities in the Balkans attracting the attention of politicians, scholars and the public. Known as “Egypcani” in Macedonia and Kosovo, or as “Jevgs/Jevgits” in Albania, these Albanophone Muslims are usually identified as Albanianised “Gypsies” by the societies in which they live, although they consider themselves to be descendents of Egyptian immigrants to the Ba…
Gypsiness,” Racial Discourse and Persecution: Balkan Roma during the Second World War
The debate about the Roma's fate throughout the Second World War has taken on a controversial character in recent years. The focal point of this controversy is whether the Roma's persecution was racially motivated or not. Reflecting upon the Roma's treatment throughout the war period, various scholars regard social-political factors such as the wandering way of life and especially the ascription of criminality as the main reasons for discriminati…
