Years of Danish school history
In 2014, the Danish school system celebrated its 200-year anniversary with a five-volume publication entitled Dansk skolehistorie gennem 500 år (500 years of Danish school history). As editors-in-chief, we took our inspiration from the cultural turn within history more generally and the search for the black box of schooling among historians of education more specifically. Our ambition was to write a history about how schooling was done, experienc…
Gender encounters university-university encounters gender
This article deals with the encounters between female students and Aarhus University, Denmark during the first twenty-five years of its existence. My goal is to identify the affective processes of female student life as resulting from the intra-actions of immateriality and materiality. The paper offers an invitation to join me on my research journey into the archives and history of the university. Maria Tamboukou's thinking about the archive as a…

The class of 1980
This paper is based on the author’s experiences of interviewing seven men and seven women who graduated from a Danish high school in 1980, at a moment when the upper secondary system underwent a process of democratisation. She questioned the informants as to the role education has played in their lives, and as to the sense their choice of education makes to them. In addition to providing extensive narrative data about the experience of going thro…
"Children's Talk and Parental Fear". Cases of Sexual Misconduct in Danish State Schools 1900-19701
Cases of sexual misconduct in Danish state schools became the objects of attention in the years following the turn of the 20th Century. An analysis of 85 cases where teachers were accused of sexual misconduct towards their students reveals that the period from 1900 to 1970 present a set of changes in the attitudes to and management of intergenerational sexuality. Throughout these years there existed three ambivalent features relating to the child…
The Panopticon of Childhood
In 1946 the well‐known Danish educator Sofie Rifbjerg (1886–1991) travelled for six months to the USA. The purpose of her trip was to study American developmental psychology. On her way she spent some time at the Institute of Child Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley. The institute had become famous because of its working on longitudinal studies of parents and children during the years of the great Depression. Affiliated with the in…

The use by children and the young of alcohol, tobacco, films and pulp novels in the years before the outbreak of the First World War was a subject of extensive concern. The debate about tobacco, film and the pulp fiction took on the character of moral panics, while the alcohol issue remained a moral crusade which functioned as a kind of underlying sounding‐board for the three panics. Starting with the issue of children's tobacco smoking I give an…
