When and Where Do Home Values Increase in Response to Planned Light Rail Construction
This paper examines the effects of an investment in light rail transit on single-family property values in Montgomery County, Maryland, with a focus on when and where such capitalization takes place and with intent to inform efforts to promote equitable transit-oriented development. We employ both hedonic price and repeat-sales estimation techniques to assure the results are robust. The findings indicate that housing prices, after the light rail …
Slavery in the Dutch Colonial Empire in Southeast Asia
This article focuses on slavery in colonial Amboina, particularly during the latter half of the seventeenth century. It begins with an outline of the geography and demography of slavery in the province of Amboina, first dealing with slaves owned by non-indigenous urban groups, the employees of the VOC and the ‘settlers’, the Europeans, Chinese and ‘Indigenous’ (in this case non-Amboinese Asian migrants) citizen groups, and then turns to those own…

Measuring urban form at community scale
Characterising urban sprawl on a local scale with accessibility measures
Although measuring sprawl based on morphology is conceptually simple and easy to implement, it is of limited use for deriving implications for urban planning. However, measuring sprawl based on accessibility enables us to observe the impact of development and establish a customised place-based policy by examining the spatial variation within the region. This study aims to develop and operationalise accessibility-based sprawl indicators. For this …
The Oxford handbook of urban economics and planning
This volume embodies a problem-driven and theoretically informed approach to bridging frontier research in urban economics and urban/regional planning. The authors focus on the interface between these two sub-disciplines that have historically had an uneasy relationship.
Millenarianism in Mountainous Central Java. The Case of Pekalongan 1871

Steamers, Freighting Contracts and Dock-Harbours Reflections on the History of the Java Sea, 1830–1930
The project about the maritime history of the Java Sea, in which various scholars from Indonesia and the Netherlands have been participating since about 1996, bears the title ‘The Java Sea Region in an Age of Transition, 1870–1970’. From the beginning of the project there has been discussion about the time-span to be covered by the project, especially about the terminal year. Some people feared that the availability of sources would limit the pro…
All about Money
In the last few decades the debate about the characteristics of early modern maritime trade in Southeast Asia has received extra impetus through the provision of new empirical substance. Amongst others the use of eighteenth-century shipping lists from the archives of the Dutch East India Company has brought the analysis to a higher level. For Makassar, Batavia, Banten and Cirebon this article connects the statistics on ships' volume and commoditi…
The Governor-General and the Sultan An Attempt to Restructure a Divided Amboina in 1638
On 3 May 1638, Anthonie van Diemen, Governor-General of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), the Dutch East India Company, met Hamzah, Sultan of Ternate, in the roadstead of Kambelo. Kambelo was one of the principal settlements on the west coast of Hoamoal, the western peninsula of the island of Seram. As such it was part of the Ternatan dependencies in the Amboina Islands, present-day Maluku Tengah. Van Diemen had arrived in Amboina at …

Monsoon Traders
Makassar was one of those early-modern Southeast Asia kingdoms which has been seen as exemplifying The Age of Commerce, both in its trade based prosperity in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, and its decline into insignificance following conquest by the Dutch East Indies Company in 1667. However, statistical analysis of the Dutch harbourmasters registers (which listed incoming and outgoing non-Company traffic) reveals that Makassa…
Legalizing Smart Growth
There is widespread agreement that metropolitan growth should be channeled into compact, walkable developments. New growth should include diverse housing types and mixed land uses and support pedestrian access and public transit. This article investigates how local government regulation has responded to this trend. Local development regulation is empirically examined by analyzing how much “smart growth” policies are implemented at the local level…

Headhunting, Carnage and Armed Peace in Amboina, 1500-1700
Despite a corpus of sources, historians of the Moluccas (Indonesia) have given little attention to military history. While land warfare consisted mainly of headhunting raids, maritime warfare was essentially amphibious, with a fleet (hongi) sailing to an enemy beach where a village would be stormed. The European intrusion brought changes to this general pattern. The Dutch East India Company developed its own hongi, consisting of local vessels and…
Do Plans Matter
Using data on vacant land sales in Washington County, Oregon, the authors find that plans for light rail investments have positive effects on land values in proposed station areas. These findings suggest that such capitalization is likely to discourage the development of low-density housing in station areas and encourage high-density, transportation-oriented development. More important, the results provide support for a model in which planning is…

Managing Urban Growth with Urban Growth Boundaries
Shipping and Trade in Java, c . 1775
Since the 1930s shipping and trade in Southeast Asia during the early modern period have attracted much attention from historians. The pioneer in this field was the Dutch scholar, J. C. van Leur, whose original work was translated into English during the 1950s (Van Leur 1955). Van Leur's interest was heavily weighted toward what he labelled ‘old Asian trade,’ and as such he was one of the first who called for an Asia-centric perspective. He drew …
Do Plans Matter? A Game-Theoretic Model for Examining the Logic and Effects of Land Use Planning
Although state and local growth management programs vary widely, nearly all such programs include one common feature: they require local governments to plan. While there has been extensive research on the effects of growth management in general and on specific policy instruments to manage urban growth there has been little research on the effects of planning. In this paper we present a game-theoretic model of urban development in which a rational…
Public Support for Remedial Action Planning
This article examines public support for the Remedial Action Plan for the Upper Fox River and Lower Green Bay watershed of Lake Michigan by analyzing the results of a telephone survey. The survey found support for a remedial action plan, measured in both willingness to pay and willingness to support a new agency to implement the plan, was significantly greater among those familiar with the plan. The survey also found willingness to pay for the pl…
The Effects of “Preprinting” on Survey and Item Response Rates
Inventories of recreation facilities are often conducted using mail surveys, which typically have low response rates. One potential way to increase response rates is to “preprint” the survey form with all previously provided information. To explore this potential, we examined the effects of preprinting on survey form and item response rates. Results showed that preprinting indeed increases response rates but may lower item response rates. These r…
Shallow Waters, Rising Tide
In the historiography of Southeast Asia of the early modern period maritime trade has always been an important topic. A good opportunity for learning more about early modern shipping and trade is by making use of the few surviving harbourmasters' registrations of private traffic in fifteen major ports in Java around the year 1775. In this book these records, registering more than 20,000 ship movements, are analysed and interpreted in their broade…

Europeans, Mestizos and Slaves
In India under the English East India Company, it was said: “Necessity is the mother of invention and the father of the Eurasian”. This saying is based on the widespread belief that, during the first centuries of their presence in Asia, European men were to a large extent dependent on “non-white” women for their sexual contacts. The character of these early colonial settlements is therefore often described as non-European. Their population is cha…

The Demography of Ambon in the Seventeenth Century
In modern Indonesia the demographic study of the population has become a major field of academic interest. The reason is obvious: the endeavour to develop the nation's economy in order to give every citizen a proper standard of living and to guarantee this in the future, bears a strong relation to the size of the population and the desire to stem the tide of excessive population growth. Demographic studies are only recent and the same is true for…
State Land Use Planning and Inclusionary Zoning

Unfor tunately, the debate rages with little empirical evidence on substantive is sues. Intraurban Physician Location
This article addresses an issue of continuing interest to social scientists: the spatial distribution of physician services. Although there have been many studies of physician distribution across urban areas and states, there have been few studies, none recent, of physician distribution within urban areas. The paper begins with a review of studies that examine the determinants of intraurban physician location. Following the review the paper offer…
