  • Support for democracy in ego‐centered social contexts

Open Access•Paweł Kamiński, Marta Kołczyńska et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2022•References: 37

Objective We investigate the influence of social contexts on democratic attitudes. Methods We use a novel survey data set with data from a nationally representative sample of Polish residents (egos) and their friends and acquaintances (alters). Results Controlling for several factors defined on the ego‐ and alter‐levels, we find a positive relationship between alters’ and ego's endorsement of democracy over nondemocratic alternatives. This effect…

    Open Access•J E Jackson, Bogdan W Mach et al.•ARTICLE•European Union Politics•2011•Cited by: 10•References: 19

Positive assessments of what entry to the European Union (EU) meant for Poland and for Poles increased after the 2003 vote to join and dramatically so after accession. Analysis of panel data from 2003 and 2008 shows the increase in positive assessments is related to the size of EU transfers and to increases in personal income, particularly for assessments of personal benefits. The attitude changes are also related to variables associated with ind…

  • Intergenerational Mobility in Poland: 1972–88–94

    Bogdan W Mach•CHAPTER•Social mobility in Europe•2004

Detailed 1972–1988–1994 comparisons of intergenerational mobility in Poland reveal significant gender differences. Instances of upward movement increase over time among women, but remain stable among men. No temporal change is the general trend in male relative mobility, while a clear tendency towards increasing fluidity characterizes its female patterns. Although in terms of the core model of Erikson and Goldthorpe, Polish mobility patterns move…

Does the relationship between social structure and personality during times of apparent social stability obtain as well under conditions of radical social change ? There are good reasons to think that it might not. To find out, the authors conducted surveys in Poland and Ukraine during 1992-1993, with dramatic results. In those respects in which the socialist Poland of 1978 had shown a pattern of relationships similar to that of the capitalist Un…

  • Analyses of Social Distances Among Classes: Detailed Analyses for Hungary and Poland

Albert Simkus, Bogdan W Mach et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sociology•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper presents detailed analyses of eight dimensions of objective distances among social classes in Hungary and Poland based on large-scale social surveys carried out during the 1980s. The data for both countries could be fitted well with a modified log-multiplicative model that included a single set of relative class distances and class-specific tendencies for homophily across all dimensions. Social distances were greatest with regard to th…

    Bogdan W Mach, K U Mayer et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•1994•Cited by: 1

Focusing on career mobility conceived as a sequence of job-shifts within and between firms, in this paper we compare Germany and Poland with regard to job-shift patterns found among men and women in these countries. The paper aims at testing a series of hypotheses on the comparative impact of labour-market segmentation (industrial sector, firm size, and social class) in welfare-capitalist and state-socialist systems. The hypotheses are tested aga…

  • Unfulfilled Systemic Functions of Social Mobility I: A Theoretical Scheme

    Open Access•Wlodzimierz Wesolowski, Bogdan W Mach•ARTICLE•International Sociology•1986•Cited by: 10•References: 8

Contrary to the views of some Marxists, we are firmly convinced that social mobility is not a 'bourgeois problematic'. We believe that, given certain preconditions, mobility processes may contribute significantly to the effective functioning of a socialist socio-economic system. In this respect they have great potential but the effective utilization of that potential is problematic

One of the functions of education is the transmitting of social reproduction from one generation to the next. Especially interesting are comparisons between systems with and without explicit educational reforms designed to reduce social inequality, and that are based on the assumption that the link between education and occupation is extremely strong in the socialist countries. However, these conclusions are largely based on research which lacks …
