    Open Access•J I Prattis•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•1980

Marginality and development of North Atlantic maritime communities are viewed in theoretical perspective. The ecological, technological and community circumstances are similar, while the political and economic frameworks within which the communities are incorporated vary. The components of modernization are discussed and the process of structural differentiation is stressed as it produces a heterogeneous set of economic sectors thereby establishi…

  • Modernization and the Problem of Abstractive Levels

    Open Access•J I Prattis•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•1978•Cited by: 1

Studies of modernization and change tend to perpetuate a dichotomy between micro- and macro-levels of sociological analysis. This bifurcation is used to introduce the problem of abstractive levels whereby the properties and procedures of system-level analysis and ego-centred approaches are discussed and compared. The contention is that both levels of abstraction must be incorporated within our explanations of social phenomena. The application of …

  • Situational Logic, Social Structure, and Highland Burma [and Comments and Reply]

    J I Prattis, James Baltaxe et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1976•Cited by: 1

The theoretical gap between micro and macro levels of sociological analysis is handled by a concept set that integrates normative and transactional analyses of social phenomena. The concept set of situational logic-which refers to an actor's location in social structure and access to power and resources-when combined with equilibrium analysis, provides the necessary tools to comprehend how social systems operate. Political Systems of Highland Bur…

  • A Model of Shipboard Interaction on a Hebridean Fishing Vessel

    J I Prattis•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1973

Status incongruence theory and Barth's transactional model are combined to produce an assumption set that accounts for shipboard behaviors observed on a Hebridean fishing vessel. The standard prestations that define and maintain the role set of skipper-deckhand-cook are described. Analysis focuses (a) on the status incongruence of the cook and the predictable manner in which he copes with the situation and (b) on the effects of the observer. The …

  • Competing Paradigms and False Polemics in Economic Anthropology

    J I Prattis•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•1973•Cited by: 3

It is argued that the current Marxist response to transactional theory in economic anthropology is based on a false polemic. A demonstration that both exchange and production theory can be subsumed under a common set of methodological assumptions, and that they have discrete domains of applicability implies that they are complementary approaches on different ontological levels and not epistemological competitors
