De Brès’ notes and letters were published posthumously as Procedures tenues . As he had written Le baston de la foy chrestienne as a guide for the Reformed who had to defend their faith, now de Brès had to defend himself and use his knowledge of the Church Fathers. De klassiek gereformeerde Liturgie 1.0
The National Synod of the Reformed Churches was convened by the Earl of Leicester in The Hague in 1586 in a period of crisis. One of the Synod’s results was the Church Order, of which handwritten copies were sent to the provincial synods and classes. The synod’s second major work was on the liturgical formularies. While the ‘ceremonies’ in the Dathenus Psalter only contained three forms, Synod 1586 validated a shorter version of the formulary for…
‘The Comfort for the Sick’ as ars moriendi
During the Protestant Reformation of the Churches in the Low Countries the sacrament of extreme unction and rituals surrounding burial were eliminated. The ever-present reality of illness and approaching death, however, kept demanding pastoral care and comfort for the dying. In the 1570s a text was published, Den Siecken Troost (Comfort for the Sick), which found its way into the Reformed books of liturgy. This article researches the author’s ide…

Emancipating Calvin
The eleven essays in Emancipating Calvin: Culture and Confessional Identity in Francophone Reformed Communities demonstrate the vitality and variety of early modern Francophone Reformed communities by examining the ways that local contexts shaped the reception and implementation of reforming ideas emanating especially from John Calvin and the Reformed church of Geneva. The articles address three main themes important for understanding the develop…
Guy de Brès’s "Le baston de la foy chrestienne"
Guy de Brès, who would become the author of the "Confessio Belgica", published his first work in 1555, "Le baston de la foy chrestienne", a florilegium of quotes from the Bible and the Church Fathers, that was intended as a guide for the faithful who were engaged in dispute over Reformed doctrine. De Brès, a preacher in the South of the Low Countries, travelled to Lausanne and Geneva (1556-1559) to further study theology and improve his Latin. Th…

Harmonia Legis
John Calvin's plan to study Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy in the form of a Harmony was conceived in the congrégations, the Bible studies of the ministers of Geneva and its surrounding villages. A surviving manuscript of Calvin's introductory exposition to the series, studied here for the first time since the sixteenth century, reveals intriguing details on the conception of this plan. It also sheds light on the history of the congré…
John Calvin on the Visions of Ezekiel
John Calvin's sermons on Ezekiel, held between 1552 and 1554 in the church 'la Madeleine' in Geneva and now studied for the first time, offer intriguing material on his exposition of prophetic visions. The manuscripts disclose the reformer's preaching on the book as a whole, including the visions on the restoration of Israel, Gog and Magog, and the great temple vision. The first part of this study focuses on the history of patristic, medieval and…
The Presence and Participation of Laypeople in the Congrégations of the Company of Pastors in Geneva
The congregations in Geneva, held on Fridays, were instituted for the ongoing training of the ministers of the word and for the preservation of unity in doctrine. The sources reveal also that lay members of the church were present on a regular basis in the biblical study meetings. This essay is intended to identify as many individual lay participants as possible and to evaluate their social and economic status in the city as well as their relatio…
