This qualitative single-case study examines how spirituality promotes mental health within a stigmatized occupation by analyzing an in-depth interview with “Perla,” a 62-year-old Mexican woman with decades of experience in sex work. Guided by Virginia Satir’s Transformational Systemic Therapy (STST), specifically the Self-Mandala and Iceberg Metaphor, we conceptualize spirituality as a universal human dimension of meaning, moral orientation, and …

The Relationship Between Microaggressions, Race-Based Traumatic Stress, and Posttraumatic Growth: Assessing the Moderating Role of Christian Gratitude for African American Christians
In the current study, the authors sought to understand the relationships between Christian gratitude (CG) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) following racial and ethnic microaggressions (REMs) and race-based traumatic stress (RBTS) in a sample of Black Christians in the United States ( N = 157). Using a moderated mediation analysis, the researchers explored the mediating role of RBTS in the link between REM and PTG, using CG as a moderator between RB…
Kim Namch’ŏn’s Barley: Architecture of Loss and Life in Late Colonial Korea
This study examines the aesthetic significance of the apartment building in Kim Namch’ŏn’s Barley in relationship to the novella’s narrative form. Actively directing the narrative movement, on the one hand, and representing the sense of alienation experienced by Korean intellectuals in the colonial period, on the other, the building is both realistic and allegorical. Its functional role in the narrative development, as well as its symbolic repres…

Culturally Grounded Indicators of Resilience in Social-Ecological Systems
Measuring progress toward sustainability goals is a multifaceted task. Inter- national, regional, and national organizations and agencies seek to promote resilience and capacity for adaptation at local levels. However, their measurement systems may be poorly aligned with local contexts, cultures, and needs. Understanding how to build effective, culturally grounded measurement systems is a fundamental step toward supporting adaptive management and…

IUCN, WWF and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have developed this guidebook to assist marine protected area (MPA) managers in assessing the performance of their MPA. Based on this assessment, it shows how necessary changes can be made to improve management measures. It presents a flexible approach that can be used in many types of MPA and offers a variety of specific biological, socio-economic and governance indicato…
A Systematic Test of an Enterprise Strategy for Community‐Based Biodiversity Conservation
A commonly held belief is that if people can benefit financially from enterprises that depend on nearby forests, reefs, and other natural habitats, then they will take action to conserve and sustainably use them. The Biodiversity Conservation Network brought together conservation and development organizations and local communities to systematically test this hypothesis across 39 conservation project sites in Asia and the Pacific. Each project imp…

The current status of the size-distance hypotheses
In the history of the psychology of perception few matters have been of more continuous interest than the relationship between perceived size and perceived distance. It is our objective to examine the current status of this question by reviewing the recent literature. With some exceptions our review will be confined to investigations which have been reported since 1952. Several surveys of the literature prior to 1952 are available, and for this r…
