In 1849, french immigrant to Mexico, René Masson, a firm republican and liberal, gave the small french community there a newspaper called Le Trait d'Union. For nearly twenty-five years, through the liberal revolution, the civil war, the French intervention and then the Empire, he used his vigourous style and his talents as a polemicist to serve the cause of Mexican men of progress
