  • Neanderthal had a “crush” on fats. Macronutrient estimation in Middle Paleolithic (Late Mousterian) hunter-gatherers of southern Italy

    Open Access•Jacopo Crezzini, A Modi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2025

During the Late Mousterian period Apulia (southeastern Italy) was characterized by frequent and prolonged aridity that could have caused the scarcity of vegetable foods and, consequently, a lack of important nutritional compounds. Zooarchaeological studies from several Mousterian contexts show that Apulian Neanderthals may have responded to this crisis by increasing the exploitation of ungulates. In particular, bone grease rendering was likely on…

Open Access•Jacopo Crezzini, Francesco Boschin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeofauna•2025

Galgenbühel/Dos de la Forca is an Early Mesolithic site located at Salorno (Province of Bolzano, Italy) and dated approximately between 8,500 and 7,500 cal. BC. The subsistence economy of the settlement relied on the exploitation of nearby wetlands and of the forested valley bottom; together with ungulates such as wild boar, red deer and chamois, the fauna comprises small carnivores and semi-aquatic mammals such as otter and beaver. The latter is…

The Oscurusciuto rock shelter (Ginosa, Puglia, southern Italy) is a Middle Palaeolithic site characterized by a significant stratigraphy made up by several anthropic levels. The stratigraphic unit 13, consisting of a sandy compact deposit mixed with pyroclastic sediment, is a short palimpsest situated on a layer of tephra, identified as Mt. Epomeo green tuff (dated Ar/Ar ~ 55 ka BP). From a technological point of view, the aims of the production …
