  • Hunter‐Gatherer Cosmologies

    Open Access•Chris Low•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

Cosmology is one of the three key domains used by anthropologists to define hunter‐gatherers. Although there is much variety found among hunter‐gatherers, broad continuities are typically envisaged across a range of cosmological themes including animism, shamanism, double creation, sacred geographies, tricksters, and worldview. Since the 1980s, researchers have problematized many of these categories and taken cosmology from the field of “primitiv…

  • The role of the body in Kalahari San healing dances

    Chris Low•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2015•Cited by: 5

Despite extensive interest of both scholars and the wider public in the Kalahari San healing dance, there has been little analysis of the dance that begins with the biological human body. In this paper I explore the role of the body in the dance by drawing on my own KhoeSan healing experience, professional knowledge as an osteopath and acupuncturist, wider anthropological work on possession dance and a tentative neurophysiological interpretation.…

  • Birds and Khoesān

    Open Access•Chris Low•ARTICLE•Africa•2011•Cited by: 10•References: 22

It is not surprising that animals have played a significant role in KhoeSān cosmology but identifying exactly what that role is and how it relates to different contexts of belief and action is more challenging. This article identifies a special role for birds in KhoeSān thought and practice, which is tightly bound to matters of spirit and healing, seems relatively cohesive and is distinctive and widespread, both culturally and historically. Worki…

  • Finding and Foregrounding Massage in Khoisan Ethnography

Chris Low•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2007•Cited by: 2

This article demonstrates that massage is a commonplace and important healing strategy amongst ‘Khoisan’. Ethnographic and anthropological literature, however, does not seem to reflect this and largely ignores or downplays massage. The article accounts for this apparent anomaly in terms of the contingency of the ethnographic eye. I contend that the primary reasons for this partiality concern the ‘everyday’ and ‘recognisable’ nature of massage and…

  • Khoisan wind

    Open Access•Chris Low•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2007•Cited by: 25•References: 13

In this paper I draw on my findings and those of historical and recent Khoisan ethnography to attempt to explain how these southern African 'Khoi' and San peoples relate to wind and how the environmental phenomenon has informed their epistemology and ontology. I begin by fleshing out the knowledge and experience of wind among these past and recent hunter-gatherers and, pointing to continuity in wind relationships and the ideas that stem from them…
