  • Quaternary geology in Calabria (Southern Italy)

Open Access•Francesco Muto, Giulio Iovine et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2026

Calabria (Southern Italy) extends over about 15,000 km2 in the complex tectonic framework of the Mediterranean region and provides a unique opportunity to study the interplay between tectonics and Quaternary evolution. By properly integrating literature and chronological constraints, a comprehensive analysis of the Calabrian Quaternary deposits resulted in the 1:250,000 scale map, here presented. Different depositional environments – including al…

  • Radon activity concentrations in the soils of the Gioia Tauro Basin (Calabria, southern Italy), with insights on geo-structural control

Open Access•Marina Muto, Valeria Lupiano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2026

The main aim of this work is to map Radon activity concentrations in the soil of a tectonically-active Mediterranean sector (Gioia Tauro Basin, Calabria, southern Italy). A total of 276 measurements have been taken at a depth of ca. 60 cm from the soil surface, using a portable ionisation chamber, according to a pre-established protocol. Measurements have been performed at the centroids of a 2.5 km square grid, and along transverse sections acros…

  • Indoor radon measurements in Calabria (Southern Italy)

Open Access•Valeria Lupiano, Salvatore Procopio et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

Radon gas from the ground is the main source of indoor concentrations in buildings, regardless of construction characteristics. According to Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM, EU Member States must establish national reference levels for indoor radon concentrations in workplaces and draw up a National Radon Plan. In Calabria (Southern Italy), maps of indoor measurements at regional scale are not available. A set of 1434 average annual measurement…

  • Geomorphic effects caused by heavy rainfall in the Corigliano-Rossano area (NE Calabria, Italy) on 12 August 2015

Open Access•Valeria Rago, Valeria Lupiano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

The surroundings of Corigliano and Rossano (NE Calabria) were damaged by a short-lasting and localized rainstorm on 12 August 2015, when more than 230 mm of rain in sixteen hours caused damage exceeding 100 million euros. In the Map, shallow landslides triggered by the event are shown at 1:50,000 scale, together with areas affected by soil erosion and flooding, and most damaged sites; historical landslides are also mapped. The main slope-stabilit…

  • Landslide inventory and main geomorphological features affecting slope stability in the Picentino river basin (Campania, southern Italy)

Open Access•Valeria Lupiano, Valeria Rago et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

The landslide inventory of the Picentino basin was realized at 1:25,000, with focus on main geomorphological features affecting slope stability. It is based on different sets of air-photos (scales 1:33,000–1:18,000, dated up to 1998), and on field surveys. Among shallow landslides, channelized debris flows strongly prevail, originated as debris slides on moderately steep slopes. Further sectors are affected by deeper slope movements of greater ex…

  • Geomorphic effects caused by heavy rainfall in southern Calabria (Italy) on 30 October–1 November 2015

Open Access•Valeria Rago, Francesco Chiaravalloti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

A severe rainfall event occurred in southern Calabria between 29 October and 2 November 2015, causing two deaths and serious damage to transport infrastructure. Widespread slope erosion and thousands of shallow landslides were triggered on the slopes, combined with flooding and transport of debris along the streams. Rains recorded by the regional gauge network and the national radar monitoring system were analysed by means of Kriging techniques. …
