  • Bathymetry and lakebed characterization of Bracciano lake (Lazio region, central Italy)

Open Access•Gabriella Di Martino, Sara Innangi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2026

Bracciano is a volcanic lake located in central Italy, close to Rome, serving as the primary source of drinking water for the city. It is included in the Bracciano-Martignano regional natural park and is susceptible to the impact of various human activities that interact with its lakebed morphology. The latest bathymetric chart of the lakebed was published in 1969 and showed the overall morphology of the bottom with 5 m spaced isobaths. This pape…

  • Geohazard features of the Northern Sardinia

Open Access•Alessandro Conforti, Francesca Budillon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

The maps of the geohazard-related features of the North Sardinia continental margin produced by the Magic project (MArine Geohazard along Italian Coasts) are here presented. The maps were created on the base of morphobathymetric data obtained by with multibeam echo sounders. ThreCoNISMa, DSCG Università degli studi di Cagliari, Cittadella Universitaria Monserrato - S.P. Monserrato-Sestu, Monserrato (CA), Italye wide canyon systems, Castelsardo to…

  • Geohazard features of the Gulf of Naples and Pontine Islands (Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea)

    Open Access•Francesca Budillon, E Martorelli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

In this paper, we describe the geohazard-related elements of the Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea continental margin, situated between the 40° and 41° North latitude. These features were recognised principally through morphological analysis. The investigation utilized medium – and high-resolution digital models of the submarine landscape, produced within the framework of the Magic project (Marine Geohazard along Italian Coasts), and primarily focusing on t…

  • Geohazard features of the Tyrrhenian Calabria

Open Access•Daniele Casalbore, Alessandro Conforti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

This paper accompanies the Maps of Geohazard features of the Cilento and the Calabro-Tyrrhenian continental margin in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy). The main geohazard-related features were derived from extensive seafloor mapping through the collection of high-resolution multibeam data acquired during several oceanographic cruises. They encompass many fluids seepage features, fault scarps, landslides scars, gullies, channels, and canyons. H…

  • Linosa island

Open Access•Sara Innangi, Luciana Ferraro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

This publication presents a newly created map of the seafloor of Linosa, a volcanic island located in the Sicily Channel (Mediterranean Sea). The seafloor of Linosa was previously surveyed using geophysical and ground-truth data (in 2016 and 2017). Linosa is regarded as a "sentinel area" for alien species and worldwide environmental changes because of its geographical location, making it worthy of particular attention. The predominant habitats fo…

  • Geohazard features of the western Sardinia

Open Access•G De Falco, Alessandro Conforti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

The Maps of Geohazard features of the Western Sardinia produced by the Magic project (MArine Geohazard along Italian Coasts) were presented. The maps were created using morphobathymetric data obtained by surveying with a multi-beam echo sounder. The main potential geo-hazards on the western Sardinian margin are related with the presence of three pockmark fields which include hundreds of elements from few meters to several hundred meters in diamet…

  • Coralligenous banks along the western and northern continental shelf of Sardinia Island (Mediterranean Sea)

Open Access•G De Falco, Alessandro Conforti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2022

Mapping of coralligenous banks was carried out along the continental shelf of the northern and western margin of Sardinia Island (Italy, western Mediterranean Sea) in the context of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD, 2008/56/EC). Coralligenous banks are bioconstructions produced by calcareous coralline algae. Seafloor mapping was carried out through multibeam echosounder surveys and video transects, using a Remote Operating V…

  • New bathymetry of the Linosa volcanic complex from multibeam systems (Sicily Channel, Mediterranean Sea)

Open Access•Renato Tonielli, Sara Innangi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

This paper presents new bathymetric data acquired around Linosa Island, in the Pelagie Archipelago, revealing the submarine extension of the volcanic edifice, more wide and complex than previously known. The seafloor of Linosa, from the coastal area to about 1000 m depth, was mapped with multibeam systems during the ‘Linosa 2016’ and ‘BioGeoLin 2017’ surveys. A bathymetric map of the surveyed area (about 298 km2) was drawn at the original 1:30,00…

  • Seabed classification around Lampione islet, Pelagie Islands Marine Protected area, Sicily Channel, Mediterranean Sea

Open Access•Sara Innangi, Gabriella Di Martino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

We present the first seabed map of the shallow-water areas of Lampione, the islet of the Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area (Sicily Channel, Italy). The seafloor was mapped from the coast to a depth of about 75 m, using high-resolution multibeam systems (both for bathymetry and backscatter) along with ground-truth data in the form of grab samples and ROV video-observations. By integrating these original data, a first seabed classification was …

  • Seafloor mapping using high-resolution multibeam backscatter

Open Access•Sara Innangi, Salvatore Passaro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

We present a seafloor map of the summit of Palinuro Seamount, an E–W elongated volcanic ridge located in the Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea. The seafloor was mapped using multibeam backscatter and seafloor samples collected between 80 and 1000 m below the sea level. The high-resolution imaging of the Palinuro seafloor was obtained by merging a Digital Terrain Model with a 2.5 m-sized grid and a backscatter mosaic with 2.5 m pixel. The resulting 1:20,000 …
