Mercury’s Discovery quadrangle (H11) is in the planet’s southern hemisphere (0–90°W, 22.5– 65°S), one of fifteen mapping quadrangles covering Mercury. Here we present a 1:3,000,000 (1:3M) scale geological map of H11, constructed using data collected by NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft mission. On top of a ∼166 m/pixel monochrome basemap, we digitized geological units and their contacts, and additional linear and surface features. We produced two versi…

  • Geology of the Bach quadrangle (H15), Mercury

    Open Access•Annie R Lennox, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

Mercury’s Bach quadrangle (H15) is the areapoleward of 65 °S. We mapped this geologically using remote sensing-basedobservations of surface morphology revealed on MESSENGER data products. Thismap contributes to a series of quadrangle maps providing geological context forthe ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury. We performed digitisation at ∼1:400,000scale and final publication scale is 1:3,000,000. There are four morphologicallydistinct plains…

  • Geology of the Michelangelo quadrangle (H12), Mercury

Open Access•Salvatore Buoninfante, Valentina Galluzzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

The Michelangelo quadrangle of Mercury (H12) encompasses the area between latitudes 22.5°S–65°S and longitudes 180°E–270°E. The quadrangle covers almost 6.5% of the planet’s surface with a total area of almost 5 million km2. Geologic contacts and linear features were drawn at a mapping scale between 1:300,000 and 1:600,000, based on photointerpretation of MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) Mercury Dual Imagi…

  • Geology of the Neruda quadrangle (H13), Mercury

Open Access•Benjamin Man, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

We present the first geological map of the Neruda Quadrangle (H13), Mercury. H13 is in Mercury’s southern hemisphere between latitudes 22.5°S–65°S, and longitudes 90°E–180° covering a total area of just under 5 million km2, equivalent to 6.5% of the planet’s surface. Map digitisation was carried out at scales between 1:300,000 and 1:700,000 for final presentation at 1:3,000,0000, from end-of-mission data products from NASA’s MESSENGER mission. We…

  • Map of tectonic shortening structures in Chryse Planitia and Arabia Terra, Mars

Open Access•Savana Z Woodley, Peter Fawdon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

We present a 1:4,000,000 scale map of tectonic landforms in Chryse Planitia and Arabia Terra, on either side of Mars’ dichotomy. Our study area is a ∼3 million km2 region, transitional between Mars’ highlands and lowlands including Oxia Planum, the landing site of the ExoMars rover. Using a structural mapping approach, we digitised all kilometre-scale tectonic structures at a scale of 1:50,000 using high-resolution data (∼6 m/pixel). Although thi…

  • Geology of the Debussy quadrangle (H14), Mercury

    Open Access•David L Pegg, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

Mercury’s Debussy Quadrangle (H14) lies between 0–90° E and 22.5–65° S. Here we use MESSENGER data to produce the first geological map of this quadrangle at a scale of 1:3,000,000, based on linework completed at a scale of 1:300,000. We distinguish crater units and plains units. For compatibility with historic and recent maps of other Mercury quadrangles, and with the first global geological map (Main Map), we have made two versions of the map, w…

  • Geology of the Hokusai quadrangle (H05), Mercury

Open Access•Jack Wright, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

The Hokusai (H05) quadrangle is in Mercury’s northern mid-latitudes (0–90°E, 22.5–65°N) and covers almost 5 million km2, or 6.5%, of the planet’s surface. We have used data from the MESSENGER spacecraft to make the first geological map of H05. Linework was digitized at 1:400,000-scale for final presentation at 1:3,000,000-scale, mainly using a ∼166 m/pixel monochrome basemap. Three major photogeologic units of regional extent were mapped: intercr…

  • Geology of the Victoria quadrangle (H02), Mercury

Open Access•Valentina Galluzzi, Laura Guzzetta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

Mercury’s quadrangle H02 ‘Victoria’ is located in the planet’s northern hemisphere and lies between latitudes 22.5° N and 65° N, and between longitudes 270° E and 360° E. This quadrangle covers 6.5% of the planet’s surface with a total area of almost 5 million km2. Our 1:3,000,000-scale geologic map of the quadrangle was produced by photo-interpretation of remotely sensed orbital images captured by the MESSENGER spacecraft. Geologic contacts were…
