A systemic approach to complex landslide risk reduction in coastal tourist areas
Coastal landslides in structurally complex and tourist-rich areas, such as the Monte Conero promontory in central Italy, pose significant challenges to environmental stability and public safety. In these settings, complex landslides often involve deep-seated translational movements evolving into sudden debris collapses at the footslope, generating significant hazards in beach areas heavily frequented by tourists. This study develops a conceptual,…
Miocene stratigraphy and vertebrate paleontology along the western side of Cerros Cadena de los Zanjones (East Pisco Basin, Peru)
The Miocene Pisco Formation (East Pisco Basin, Peru) is renowned for its abundant, well-preserved fossils of marine vertebrates, representing one of the most spectacular and complete records of Neogene marine vertebrates worldwide. Here, we present a geological map at 1:10,000 scale investigating the spatial and temporal distribution of fossil vertebrates at Cerros Cadena de los Zanjones, in the Ica River Valley. Stratigraphic and paleontological…
Towards deciphering the Cenozoic evolution of the East Pisco Basin (southern Peru)
The Cenozoic succession of the East Pisco Basin preserves the sedimentary record of several episodes of deformation of the forearc crust along the Peruvian margin. The 1:50,000 scale geological map presented here encompasses an area of about 1,000 km 2 lying astride the Ica River, and contributes to our understanding of the timing and mode of basin filling and deformation. Our novel two-fold megasequence framework provides a sound basis for estab…
Styles of Continental Contraction
"This Special Paper includes a selection of material on the various contractional styles and modes of deformation in internal and external zones, and in deep and shallow parts of orogens. The collection of case studies discusses a broad range of processes and phenomena, including thrust tectonic styles (detachment-dominated vs. thick-skinned, or crustal ramp-dominated) in different subduction and collision orogens; modes and timing of thrust-fold…
