  • Genealogy and geographical distribution of CFTR mutations in Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean (Quebec, Canada)

Open Access•Marc De Braekeleer, J Daigneault et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1996

Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean (SLSJ), a region located in northeastern Quebec, has a high incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF). During the past few years the majority of the CF patients have been genotyped. The geographical distribution of the birth places of the patients and obligate carriers of the 621 + 1G-->T, the A455E and the delta F508 mutations (which accounted for 89% of the CF chromosomes) showed differences that can be explained by some degree …

  • Autosomal recessive disorders in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (Quebec, Canada)

    Open Access•Marc De Braekeleer•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1996

The total inbreeding coefficient of a group of 574 individuals with autosomal recessive disorders (ARD) from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, a geographically isolated region of northeastern Quebec, was estimated from isonymy and compared to the mean inbreeding coefficient calculated from the genealogies. Its value was compared to that of 1722 matched controls. The total inbreeding coefficient was similar in both ARD and control groups, but higher than t…

  • Geographic distribution of 18 autosomal recessive disorders in the French Canadian population of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec

    Open Access•Marc De Braekeleer•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1995

We analysed the geographic distribution of 770 patients and 1084 obligate carriers of 18 autosomal recessive disorders that have a high incidence in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (SLSJ) (Quebec). The places of birth of the patients and the obligate carriers were found to be unevenly distributed in SLSJ. A statistically significant higher number of places of birth than expected (p < or = 0.05) was observed in Saguenay and Lac-Saint-Jean (LSJ) East, wher…

  • A prevalence and fertility study of haemochromatosis in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean

    Open Access•Marc De Braekeleer•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

The prevalence of hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean (SLSJ), a geographically isolated region of northeastern Québec, was estimated at 0.014; the heterozygote frequency was 0.21. These are among the highest frequencies found thus far in white populations. The fertility study completed in SLSJ showed that carriers of the HH gene tended to have more children than non-carriers. However, since these differences were not statisti…

  • Inbreeding effects on prereproductive mortality

    Open Access•Michael B Edmond, M Edmond et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

Effects of inbreeding on the prereproductive mortality, excluding spontaneous abortions, were investigated among offspring of 251 marriages between first-degree cousins (2:2) and 358 marriages between first-degree cousins once removed (2:3) from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. A control group matched on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the consanguineous marriages was created. The mortality rates were calculated from a computerized p…

  • Inbreeding effects on fertility and sterility

    Open Access•Michael B Edmond, M Edmond et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

Effects of inbreeding on couples' fertility and primary sterility were investigated in five marriages between uncle and niece, 251 marriages between first-degree cousins, and 358 marriages between first-degree cousins once removed from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Three control groups matched on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the consanguineous couples were created. The number of children born to each couple was extracted from a…

  • Inbreeding and kinship in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean

    Open Access•Marc De Braekeleer•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1992

Samples of individuals born between 1956 and 1971 proportional to the population size of each parish of Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean (SLSJ) were extracted from a computerized population register. The mean inbreeding and kinship coefficients were calculated for each sample. Our results showed that inbreeding and kinship were unevenly distributed in the SLSJ region. The highest values of inbreeding and kinship were found in Bas-Saguenay, an isolated subreg…
