  • Geology of the Bach quadrangle (H15), Mercury

    Open Access•Annie R Lennox, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

Mercury’s Bach quadrangle (H15) is the areapoleward of 65 °S. We mapped this geologically using remote sensing-basedobservations of surface morphology revealed on MESSENGER data products. Thismap contributes to a series of quadrangle maps providing geological context forthe ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury. We performed digitisation at ∼1:400,000scale and final publication scale is 1:3,000,000. There are four morphologicallydistinct plains…

  • Geology of the Michelangelo quadrangle (H12), Mercury

Open Access•Salvatore Buoninfante, Valentina Galluzzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

The Michelangelo quadrangle of Mercury (H12) encompasses the area between latitudes 22.5°S–65°S and longitudes 180°E–270°E. The quadrangle covers almost 6.5% of the planet’s surface with a total area of almost 5 million km2. Geologic contacts and linear features were drawn at a mapping scale between 1:300,000 and 1:600,000, based on photointerpretation of MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) Mercury Dual Imagi…

  • The high-resolution map of Oxia Planum, Mars; the landing site of the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission

Open Access•Peter Fawdon, Csilla Orgel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

This 1:30,000 scale geological map describes Oxia Planum, Mars, the landing site for the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission. The map represents our current understanding of bedrock units and their relationships prior to Rosalind Franklin’s exploration of this location. The map details 15 bedrock units organised into 6 groups and 7 textural and surficial units. The bedrock units were identified using visible and near-infrared remote sensing d…

  • Geology of the Neruda quadrangle (H13), Mercury

Open Access•Benjamin Man, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

We present the first geological map of the Neruda Quadrangle (H13), Mercury. H13 is in Mercury’s southern hemisphere between latitudes 22.5°S–65°S, and longitudes 90°E–180° covering a total area of just under 5 million km2, equivalent to 6.5% of the planet’s surface. Map digitisation was carried out at scales between 1:300,000 and 1:700,000 for final presentation at 1:3,000,0000, from end-of-mission data products from NASA’s MESSENGER mission. We…

  • Geology of the Debussy quadrangle (H14), Mercury

    Open Access•David L Pegg, David A Rothery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

Mercury’s Debussy Quadrangle (H14) lies between 0–90° E and 22.5–65° S. Here we use MESSENGER data to produce the first geological map of this quadrangle at a scale of 1:3,000,000, based on linework completed at a scale of 1:300,000. We distinguish crater units and plains units. For compatibility with historic and recent maps of other Mercury quadrangles, and with the first global geological map (Main Map), we have made two versions of the map, w…
