  • Notes on the making of an aspirational space-time in the U.S. public university

    Elsa M Davidson, Maisa C Taha•ARTICLE•Children s Geographies•2026

Drawing on ethnographic analysis of experimental undergraduate career workshops at a U.S. public university, we consider what galvanizes aspiration formation for precariously situated young people working toward post-graduation life. We see students' notions of life-to-come as encompassing spaces of family, community, and higher education, and shaped by burdens of obligation as well as material blockages. In turn, we theorize students' affects an…

  • Truth, Lies, and Audio Files

    Open Access•Maisa C Taha•ARTICLE•Anthropologica•2022

Conviviality (convivencia), a rubric for peaceable coexistence across cultural and ethnoracial differences, has been promoted as a multifaceted educational priority in contemporary Spain, although the stakes of tolerance and civility mean quite different things for pupils of autochthonous and immigrant backgrounds. For some Moroccan youth attending school in the agricultural southeast, experiences with xenophobia and racialized exclusion have mad…

  • Confusion and frustration as catalysts for change

    Maisa C Taha•ARTICLE•Ethnography & Education•2019•References: 8

Despite compelling need for transformational approaches to multiculturalism, the measures in place at many schools may be works in progress. Based on twelve months of fieldwork at the secondary-school level in El Ejido, Spain, and longitudinal interviews with key participants, this article examines conflicting articulations of race, racism, and civility shaping interactions in state mandated intercultural education courses. Interweaving analysis …

  • Rethinking the Digital Divide

    Open Access•Katherine T Mccaffrey, Maisa C Taha•ARTICLE•Annals of Anthropological Practice•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 33

The article examines smartphone use among Middle Eastern refugee families recently resettled in northern New Jersey as an opportunity to reconceptualize the language barrier during the early stages of refugee resettlement. Smartphone access and use among families reveal the interlinguistic conditions of life in resettlement, and ethnographic research demonstrates the way a tech-savvy population, conventionally considered "digitally unprepared," c…

  • Shadow Subjects

    Open Access•Maisa C Taha•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistic Anthropology•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 32

This article analyzes conversational and material data collected during 12 months of fieldwork at a secondary school in southeast Spain. I focus on the cultivation of stance positions-particularly around gender equality-involving "shadow subjects": imagined discursive figures that both prompt and constrain empathy for others whose rights have been violated. Within this multicultural context, Moroccan immigrant youth get positioned as defenders of…

    Maisa C Taha•ARTICLE•The Journal of North African…•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 8

As the number of North African Muslim immigrants in Europe grows, questions of cultural assimilation have moved to the forefront of discussion. Treated as the quintessential Other, Maghribines' long-term presence in France prompted a 2004 ban on religious symbols in public schools; it went without saying that the hijab was the primary target of this restriction. Politicians and public figures in Britain have called Muslim women's veiling practice…
