  • A Taste of Spain: Images of Rioja Wine in Britain and America (1890-1960)

    Aritz Farwell, Ludger Mees•ARTICLE•Global Food History•2023•References: 3

The Rioja wine that we drink today was invented in the 1860s. By the late nineteenth century, it had become widely recognized as Spain’s best red wine. One way to analyze what this success meant during the first half of the twentieth century is to look to foreign accounts. This article examines the English-language narrative that was constructed about Rioja wine between 1890 and 1960. Utilizing travelogues, food and drink guides, reference books,…

  • The Basque Contention: Ethnicity, Politics, Violence

    Ludger Mees•BOOK•Basque Contention•2019

To the outside world, for some half a century, the words Basque Country' have provoked an almost instant association with the Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA, Basque Homeland and Liberty) separatist group and violent conflict. The Basque Contention: Ethnicity, Politics, Violence attempts to undo this simplistic correlation and, for the first time, provide a definitive history of the wider political issues at the heart of the Basque Country. The political expression of this long process of Basque ‘ethnogenes…

    Ludger Mees•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•2015•Cited by: 10

In the past two decades the Basque Nationalist Party's political strategy has exemplified its historical oscillation between, on the one hand, a more radical claim to Basque sovereignty supported mostly by nationalist forces and, on the other, a comparatively more moderate Realpolitik aimed at achieving higher degrees of regional autonomy and cross-party consensus as a means of more gradual Basque nation-building. In contrast to the mainstream in…

    Open Access•Ludger Mees•ARTICLE•Historia Contemporánea•2008
