  • Fate and Persistence of Crude Oil Stranded on a Sheltered Beach

    Open Access•Edwards H Owens, John R Harper et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

Detailed observations, mapping and sampling were conducted following an experimental spill of 15 cu m of crude oil adjacent to the coast at Cape Hatt, Baffin Island, N.W.T. The beach could not retain all of the oil that reached the shoreline, and as a result, one-third of the spill oil was recovered in cleanup activities on the water, approximately one-third was lost to the atmosphere and to the ocean and one-third remained stranded on the intert…

  • The Fate of Chemically Dispersed and Untreated Crude Oil in Arctic Benthic Biota

Open Access•B Humphrey, Paul D Boehm et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

Subtidal benthic biota were monitored for petroleum hydrocarbons following two experimental oil spills at Cape Hatt, N.W.T., Canada. In one spill oil was chemically dispersed into the water column, and in the other oil was released onto the water surface and allowed to strand on the shoreline. In addition to baseline samples, samples were collected immediately after the oil releases, two to three weeks after and one and two years after. Initial o…

  • The Fate of Oil in the Water Column Following Experimental Oil Spills in the Arctic Marine Nearshore

    Open Access•B Humphrey, D R Green et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

Petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in the water column were monitored after a release of crude oil onto the water surface and a subsurface release of chemically dispersed oil. During the surface release, petroleum hydrocarbons did not disperse into the water column deeper than 1 m. The highest concentrations observed under the slick were less than 2 mg/l. The chemically dispersed oil released resulted in concentrations over 50 mg/l in the Bay 9…

  • Hydrocarbon Biogeochemical Setting of the Baffin Island Oil Spill Experimental Sites. III. Biota

    Open Access•Walter J Cretney, David R Green et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

A baseline for petroleum residues in the Cape Hatt region of Baffin Island in arctic Canada was obtained in anticipation of controlled oil releases of the Baffin Island Oil Spill (BIOS) Project. Tissue hydrocarbons in a variety of arctic marine species were dominated by biogenic hydrocarbons. UV/F analysis of tissues indicated an upper limit of petroleum residues in the low to sub micro g/g concentration range. PAHs were detected in samples in th…

  • Effects of Short-Term Exposure to Dispersed Oil in Arctic Invertebrates

    Open Access•C Mageau, F R Engelhardt et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

A series of experimental studies was carried out as part of the Baffin Island Oil Spill (BIOS) Project to define the behavioural, physiological and biochemical reactions of three arctic marine benthic invertebrate species exposed to chemically dispersed crude oil. Behavioural responses and patterns of hydrocarbon accumulation and release observed in the bivalves and the urchin during the 1981 field spill were similar to those observed during the …

  • Comparative Fate of Chemically Dispersed and Beached Crude Oil in Subtidal Sediments of the Arctic Nearshore

    Open Access•Paul D Boehm, Margarete S Steinhauer et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

A three-year investigation was conducted to examine the incorporation of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) into subtidal sediments following experimental releases of oil during the Baffin Island Oil Spill (BIOS) Project experiments. The concentrations of PHC were determined by synchronous scanning UV/Fluorescence spectroscopy, while the composition of residual saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons was determined by gas chromatography and gas chromatogra…

  • Hydrocarbon Biogeochemical Setting of the Baffin Island Oil Spill Experimental Sites. I. Sediments

    Open Access•Walter J Cretney, David R Green et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

A baseline for petroleum residues in the sediments of the Cape Hatt Island in arctic Canada was obtained in anticipation of controlled oil releases of the Baffin Island Oil Spill (BIOS) Project. In subtidal sediments, the existing background of petroleum residues has an upper limit in the low to sub micro g/g concentration range. Petroleum was one of a variety of sources identified, including plant paraffin waxes and combustion products. Beach se…

  • Hydrocarbon Biogeochemical Setting of the Baffin Island Oil Spill Experimental Sites. II. Water

    Open Access•Walter J Cretney, David R Green et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1987

A baseline for petroleum residues in the waters of the Cape Hatt region of Baffin Island in arctic Canada was obtained in anticipation of controlled oil releases of the Baffin Island Oil Spill (BIOS) Project. Total aliphatic and aromatic residues reflecting multiple sources were found to be in the low to sub micro g/l concentrations range. Alkylated naphthalenes, phenanthrenes and dibenzothiophenes were present in the sub ng/l concentrations rang…
