Abundance of the Eastern Chukchi Sea Stock of Beluga Whales, 2012 – 17
Aerial line transect surveys were conducted during 19 July – 20 August in each of the years 2012 – 17, with onshore – offshore transects covering a study area of approximately 110 000 km2, from 140 ̊ W to 157 ̊ W longitude and from shore to 72 ̊ N latitude. These data were used to estimate abundance of the eastern Chukchi Sea (ECS) stock of beluga whales. The data were stratified based on bathymetry to reflect strong large-scale gradients in belu…
Aerial Survey Estimates of Abundance of the Eastern Chukchi Sea Stock of Beluga Whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ) in 2012
The eastern Chukchi Sea (ECS) stock of beluga whales is one of three stocks in western Alaska that are co-managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Alaska Beluga Whale Committee. Abundance of this stock was estimated as 3710 in 1991 from incomplete data. Analysis of data from satellite-linked time-depth recorders (SDRs) attached to belugas in summer concentration areas of the ECS and Beaufort Sea (BS) stocks provided an overview of…
Frequency of Injuries from Line Entanglements, Killer Whales, and Ship Strikes on Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort Seas Bowhead Whales
We analyzed scarring data for Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort (BCB) Seas bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) harvested by Alaska Native hunters to quantify the frequency of line entanglement, ship strikes, and killer whale-inflicted injuries. We had 904 records in our database for whales landed between 1990 and 2012, and after data quality screening, we found 521 records containing information on scarring. Logistic regression was used to evaluate differe…
Dive Behavior of Eastern Chukchi Beluga Whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ), 1998–2008
We provide an exploratory description of the dive behavior of 23 beluga whales of the eastern Chukchi Sea stock, tagged with satellite-linked time and depth recorders at Point Lay, Alaska, between 1998 and 2007. Because of differences in how transmitters were parameterized, we analyzed data from tags deployed from 1998 to 2002 (n = 20 tags) and data from tags deployed in 2007 (n = 3 tags) separately. Using cluster analysis, we found three basic d…
Environmental Change and Potential Impacts
"Appropriate management requires information that can be gained only through applied research. We provide a brief history of applied research on the North Slope, introduce the North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) as an organization tasked with improving the coordination of science across the region, and posit applied science priorities that are essential for successful and informed management."
Population Genetics of Bowhead Whales ( Baleana mysticetus ) in the Western Arctic
Bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus) in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas experienced a severe reduction as a result of commercial whaling in the 19th century. Since the cessation of commercial whaling, the population has recovered to a size that is approaching pre-whaling estimates. Inupiat and Yupik communities in northern and western Alaska hunt these Western Arctic (WA) bowheads along their migratory path during spring and fall. This hunt…
Distribution and Movements of the Teshekpuk Caribou Herd 1990–2005
Four caribou (Rangifer tarandus grantii) herds calve on the North Slope of Alaska, three of which have been exposed to little or no resource development. We present 15 years of baseline data on the distribution and movements of 72 satellite-collared and 10 GPS-collared caribou from the Teshekpuk caribou herd (TCH) that have had little to no exposure to oil and gas activities. Fixed-kernel home range analyses of collared caribou revealed that calv…
Breeding Biology of Steller's Eiders ( Polysticta stelleri ) near Barrow, Alaska, 1991–99
The breeding biology of Steller's eiders (Polysticta stelleri) near Barrow, Alaska, was studied from 1991 to 1999. The number of nests found per year ranged from 0 to 78. Mean clutch size was 5.4 (SD = 1.6, n = 51), incubation period was 24 days, and Mayfield nest success ranged from 0 to 35%. Egg survival was 24% overall (n = 451). Most nests were found on the rims of low-centered polygons near ponds with emergent vegetation. Marked broods remai…
Satellite Tracking of Eastern Chukchi Sea Beluga Whales into the Arctic Ocean
Beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) congregate in nearshore waters of the eastern Chukchi Sea, especially in Kotzebue Sound and Kasegaluk Lagoon, in June and July. Where they travel after they leave this area was unknown before this study. We live-captured five belugas in Kasegaluk Lagoon and attached satellite-linked depth recorders to them. The belugas, caught between 26 June and 1 July 1998, were all males, ranging in length from 398 to 440 …
Frequency of Killer Whale ( Orcinus Orca ) Attacks and Ship Collisions Based on Scarring on Bowhead Whales ( Balaena Mysticetus ) of the Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort Seas Stock
Bowhead whales of the Bering-Chukchi-Beaufort Seas stock harvested by Alaskan Eskimos were examined for scars from killer whale and ship-collision injuries. We estimated that the frequency of scars from killer whale attacks ranged from 4.1% to 7.9% (depending on our confidence that the whale was properly examined) while about 1% exhibited scars from ship collisions. The frequency of killer whale scars was considerably lower than for bowhead whale…
Bowhead Whale ( Balaena Mysticetus ) Length Estimations Based on Scapula Measurements
This study presents data and a method for reliably predicting bowhead (Balaena mysticetus) length using one length and one width measurement of the scapula. The bowhead scapula preserves well and is common in coastal arctic archaeological sites. The length measurement is taken as the maximum straight-line measurement along the axis, excluding the scapular cartilage. The width measurement is recorded as a maximum transverse measurement of the ossi…
