  • Major Cold-Season Precipitation Events at Iqaluit, Nunavut

Open Access•Gabrielle Gascon, Ronald E Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2010

This study focuses on cold-season (October-April) precipitation events at Iqaluit, Nunavut, that exceed the 97th percentile of daily corrected precipitation accumulation. This corresponds to a threshold of 9.5 mm. The characteristics of 194 major precipitation events are described for the 1955 - 96 period. On the basis of NCEP-NCAR and NARR reanalysis data, these events were classified into four storm tracks: south, west, Atlantic, and other. Sou…

  • Extratropical Cyclones and Precipitation within the Canadian Archipelago during the Cold Season

    Open Access•Matthew R Intihar, Ronald E Stewart•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2010

Extratropical cyclones produce much of the precipitation over the Arctic, but the details of this cause-effect relationship are not well documented. In this study, we examined extratropical cyclones within the Canadian Archipelago, a subregion of the Arctic, over the period 1948– 97. Using data from the Historical Canadian Climate Data (HCCD), the U.S. National Climate Center (UNCC), and the European Meteorological Bulletin (EMB), we assessed the…

  • On the Storms Passing Over Southern Baffin Island During Autumn 2005

Open Access•Erin Roberts, Nikolai Nawri et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

Although strong storms affect all regions of the Arctic, little research has focused on the details of their structure and evolution—particularly of the storms passing over southern Baffin Island. Such storms form in a variety of locations and often occlude before passing over the region. To study these storms, a field project was conducted at Iqaluit, Nunavut, in the eastern Canadian Arctic in the autumn of 2005. We launched rawinsondes into six…

  • Lightning and Fires in the Northwest Territories and Responses to Future Climate Change

Open Access•Bohdan Kochtubajda, Mike Flannigan et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

Lightning and fire characteristics within the Northwest Territories (NWT) jurisdiction of the Mackenzie Basin between 1994 and 1999 are examined using data from the lightning detection network operating in the NWT and from the national Large Fire Database maintained by the Canadian Forest Service. The convective storm season with associated lightning activity over this region is short but intense, with a strong peak in cloud-to-ground lightning d…
