  • The U.S. Arctic Observing Viewer

Open Access•William F Manley, William Manley et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2015

Although much progress has been made with various Arctic Observing efforts, assessing that progress can be difficult. What data collection efforts are established or underway? Where? By whom? To help meet the strategic needs of programs such as the U.S. Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH), the Arctic Observing Network (AON), Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON) and related initiatives, an update has been released for the Arctic O…

  • Drift Velocities of Ice Floes in Alaska's Northern Chukchi Sea Flaw Zone

    Open Access•David W Norton, A G Gaylord•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2004

By March each year, coast-influenced sea ice in Alaska's northern Chukchi Sea consists of the shorefast ice itself plus ice floes moving in a zone that extends from immediately beyond the shorefast ice to coherent pack ice, some 100 km farther offshore. Because westward-drifting polar pack ice encounters fewer landmasses (and less resistance from them) once it passes Point Barrow, a semipermanent polynya or flaw zone dominates coastal ice in this…
