  • Summer and Autumn Movements of Belugas of the Eastern Beaufort Sea Stock

    Open Access•Pierre R Richard, Anthony R Martins et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2001

Beluga whales of the eastern Beaufort Sea stock were tagged with satellite-linked time-depth recorders and tracked during summer and autumn in 1993, 1995, and 1997. Whales occupied the Mackenzie estuary intermittently and for only a few days at a time. They spent much of their time offshore, near or beyond the shelf break and in the polar pack ice of the estuary, or in Amundsen Gulf, M'Clure Strait, and Viscount Melville Sound. The movements of t…

  • Capturing and Handling of White Whales ( Delphinapterus leucas ) in the Canadian Arctic for Instrumentation and Release

Open Access•Jack R Orr, Jack Orr et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2001

For many decades, humans have captured white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) for food, research, and public display, using a variety of techniques. The recent use of satellite-linked telemetry and pectoral flipper band tags to determine the movements and diving behaviour of these animals has required the live capture of a considerable number of belugas. Three principal techniques have been developed; their use depends on the clarity and depth of t…

  • Summer and Autumn Movements and Habitat Use by Belugas in the Canadian High Arctic and Adjacent Areas

    Open Access•Pierre R Richard, Mads Peter Heide‐Jørgensen et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2001

Twenty-one adult belugas (8M, 13F) were live-captured and instrumented with satellite-linked transmitters in the summer and fall of 1996. Twelve were captured in estuaries along the coast of Somerset Island in July and nine were captured in September in Croker Bay, SE Devon Island. This paper reports on the summer and autumn movements and dive depths of these animals from late July 1996 until the last tags ceased transmitting in November 1996. Of…

  • Sightings of Belugas and Other Marine Mammals in the North Water, Late March 1993

    Open Access•Pierre R Richard, J R Orr et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1998

Surveys of belugas were flown during March 1993 in Lancaster Sound and the North Water of Baffin Bay. Most belugas were observed along the shore leads off southeastern Devon Island and in the polynya at the mouth of Jones Sound. Our results confirm other published winter observations that belugas regularly occupy the North Water's leads and polynyas in winter. Walruses, narwhals, and bowhead whales were also seen during these surveys; their prese…

  • Calibration of Aerial Thermal Infrared Imagery for Walrus Population Assessment

    Open Access•David G Barber, Pierre R Richard et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1991

Concurrent aerial photography and emitted thermal infrared (10.6 micro meters) imagery were acquired over walrus hauled out on sea ice in Foxe Basin, Northwest Territories, Canada. Digital thermal infrared data from a Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) imager provides a method for estimating walrus numbers, since the objects (walrus groups) are considerably warmer than the background (ocean and sea ice). Coincident photographic counts and thermal in…
