Energy Distribution in an Arctic Coastal Macrozooplankton Community
The proportion of caloric energy associated with each of the macrozooplankton populations at two stations in upper Frobisher Bay was determined at intervals during three consecutive open-water seasons. In the upper 50 m of the water column three species (the ctenophore Mertensia ovum, the chaetognath Sagitta elegans, and the hyperiid amphipod Parathemisto libellula) consistently accounted for 90% of the caloric content of the marcozooplankton com…
Distribution of Arctic Marine Isopods of the Mesidotea (= Saduria ) Complex in Relation to Depth, Temperature, and Salinity in the Southern Beaufort Sea
Three benthic isopods of the Mesidotea (= Saduria) complex are common in the coastal waters of the southern Beaufort Sea. Their relative distribution in relation to water depth, temperature, and salinity was studied by means of 146 trawl, grab, and trap samples. Mesidotea entomon is restricted to the warm, brackish nearshore estuarine zone, in water depths of less than 10 m. M. sibirica is most commonly encountered at intermediate depths of 5-25 …
The Biochemical Composition and Energy Content of Arctic Marine Macrozooplankton
Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, water, ash and caloric energy contents during the open water season of 14 species of macrozooplankton and four epibenthic amphipods common to the inshore waters of southern Baffin Island are compared. . The highest energy content occurred in euphausiids and hyperiid amphipods and the lowest in ctenophores and cnidarians. Lipid appeared to be an important energy reserve in most of the species examined while carbohydra…
