Meteorological Analysis and Damage Survey Study of the Impact of Hurricane Elsa in Barbados
Hurricane Elsa was the first hurricane to impact the island of Barbados in more than 60 years. Global warming is expected to increase the number of intense hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, which present a greater risk of future devastating hurricane impacts on the island. This study investigates the meteorological conditions and rapid intensification of Elsa between June 27 and July 3, 2021, by using meteorological data sets and results from the…
A Study of the Meteorological Conditions Associated with Anomalously Early and Late Openings of a Northwest Territories Winter Road
In the Canadian Arctic, winter roads are engineered across the frozen land, rivers, and lakes. The strength and longevity of these roads depend on particular weather conditions. Our research focuses on the winter road between Tulita and Norman Wells, Northwest Territories, which has been maintained officially by the territorial government since 1982. Statistical analysis of the opening dates for the winter road showed five seasons with extremely …
Science Meets Traditional Knowledge
In July 2005, several scientists from the Mackenzie GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment) Study, known as MAGS, met with aboriginal people in Deline on the shore of Great Bear Lake to exchange information on climate and water in the region. Topics discussed pertained directly to the northern environment, and they included climate variability and change, wind, lightning, lake ice, lake level, and streamflow. The traditional knowledge sh…
Lightning and Fires in the Northwest Territories and Responses to Future Climate Change
Lightning and fire characteristics within the Northwest Territories (NWT) jurisdiction of the Mackenzie Basin between 1994 and 1999 are examined using data from the lightning detection network operating in the NWT and from the national Large Fire Database maintained by the Canadian Forest Service. The convective storm season with associated lightning activity over this region is short but intense, with a strong peak in cloud-to-ground lightning d…
