An early parenting intervention focused on enriched parent–child interactions improves effortful control in the early years of school
This study examined long-term mediating effects of the smalltalk parenting intervention on children's effortful control at school age (7.5 years; 2016–2018). In 2010–2012, parents (96% female) of toddlers (N = 1201; aged 12–36 months; 52% female) were randomly assigned to either: standard playgroup, smalltalk playgroup (group-only), or smalltalk playgroup with additional home coaching (smalltalk plus). Multi-informant data indicated that smalltal…

Deep Boredom in the Underground
This article examines the problem of boredom articulated in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground. Boredom has two principal types: (1) the boredom that results from being unable to commit oneself to any final position; and (2) the boredom that results from complete commitment to a final position, thereby foreclosing consideration of other possibilities for thought and action. Both kinds of boredom prove to be ways of illusion insofar as the…

Independent predictors of breastfeeding intention in a disadvantaged population of pregnant women
In this population of socially disadvantaged pregnant women we identified five variables that were independently predictive of breastfeeding intention. These variables could be useful in identifying women at greatest risk of choosing not to breastfeed. Appropriate promotional efforts could then be designed to give due consideration to individual circumstances

A model of trade diversification based on the Markowitz model of portfolio analysis
Despite the widespread adoption of trade diversification as a legitimate policy objective by planners in developing countries, there has as yet been little effort to examine systematically the argument that diversification will reduce fluctuations in export earnings. This paper attempts to develop a model, along the lines of the Markowitz model of portfolio analysis, which would allow one to investigate the impact of diversification. The analysis…
Personnel reorganization in the Canadian public service
This paper addresses the history of public personnel reorganization of the federal level of government in Canada and focuses on two periods of fundamental change. The first of these periods revolved around the Civil Service Act of 1918 and was associated with the introduction of the merit principle. The second period revolved around the public service legislation in 1967 and was associated with introduction of the principle of collective bargaini…
