Metal Finds and Other Small Artefacts from the Late and Final Bronze Age Fortified Hilltop Settlement at the Deserted Castle in Zvolen, Central Slovakia
Obsidian treatment technology in the Lengyel culture
The article examines the treatment technology of the obsidian chipped stone industry, which, like the other findings, is mostly obtained from the major feature B15. The remains of an oven with a dome-shaped vault were also discovered inside it. Obsidian has an extremely high ratio among raw materials used in tool manufacturing at the monocultural site, accounting for 62% of the assemblage. All phases of its processing are present, allowing the re…
Wall‐to‐Wall Mapping of Anthropogenic Features in the Poiplie Region (Slovakia)
Over the past centuries, human activities have shaped landscapes in increasingly complex ways. Many historical anthropogenic features are now disappearing, making it crucial to document and assess their historical value to understand the formation, evolution and layered history of these landscapes. In the regions of Central and Eastern Europe, collectivisation of agriculture in the late 20th century and abandonment at the turn of the 21st century…

Forensic Archaeology – Should it be a Thing? A Case Study
Forensic archaeology can be described as an application of archaeological methods to forensic practice. Archaeology is a discipline that interprets the past; therefore, it is not common practice to use archaeology and archaeological methods in police or forensic investigation. In Slovakia, archaeologists are called to attend the body scene of skeletonized remains in some regions only rarely and that can often lead to the destruction of historical…
Dead and Cremated
Cremation was one of the permissible burial practices in the Linear Pottery Culture (LPC). This treatment has largely remained unexplained by previous research in Central Europe due to its descriptive nature. As a result, we present several thoughts on some key issues here. First, we discuss the current state of research in Central Europe, as well as some specifics with regard to the LPC and cremation. Second, we focus on two graveyards with excl…
Identification of historical trackways in forests using contextual geospatial analyses
This article demonstrates the application of the methods unravelling microtopographic features, specifically, sunken linear landforms indicating remains of historical trackways in forests. These are related to the ‘ Magna Via’ route in the vicinity of the Deserted Castle and the Peťuša Castle in Central Slovakia. The microtopography validation dataset indicating sunken linear landforms was used to evaluate the data overlap of tracks identified by…

Konzumácia mäsa na hradoch v novoveku
Cieľom príspevku je predstaviť a interpretovať faunálne pozostatky z archeologického výskumu predhradia NKP Hrad Dobrá Niva v katastrálnom území obce Podzámčok, okres Zvolen.
The Morava Valley Region During the Early Middle Ages
Cross-border cooperation is very important for understanding the cultural-historical development of the border regions of modern day states. These areas, today, are often considered as "peripheries". However, in the past they usually had a very different function and status. This article introduces one bilateral mobility project between the archaeological departments at the University of Vienna and the Constantine the Philosopher University in Ni…
(Un)Usual Neolithic and Early Eneolithic mortuary practices in the area of the North Carpathian Basin
On the basis of the characteristics of Neolithic and Early Eneolithic mortuary practices in the area of North Carpathian Basin it can be argued that the existence of graveyards is an isolated phenomenon. Various rituals were involved in disposing of the dead. In this article, we focus on (un)usual burials which are singled out into two major categories: cremation and inhumation. Special emphasis is given to cremation as a mortuary practice: argum…
The Lengyel culture settlement in Bučany (preliminary report on pottery processing)

The analysis focuses on a statistical method of numerical coding that simplifies working with huge data files and helps by exact description and classification of the finds. The starting pointing of this approach is recogn…
