Sport in Asia and Africa: Americanization or Mundialization
Rather than an Americanization, it is argued that there is a mundialization of sports over time. Similarities in sports activities in various countries are becoming greater than the differences. Cultural diffusion is leading to a trading of sports interests in all directions, and is likely to lead to a global sports culture—modified in varying and often substantial ways by diverse colonial legacies, historical backgrounds, and value contexts. While futbol (soccer) has long been the favorite sport in most of Latin America, baseball holds sway in the circum‐Caribbean region in countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. It is perhaps surprising that revolutionary Cuba, with its strong anti‐American foreign policy, should continue to hold dear this sport that was born and nurtured in the United States. Yet Fidel Castro himself, who regularly issues ant…
Sport Participation in Latin America
This study has three purposes. First, it compares the organization of sport in two rather different Latin American countries. Belize has primarily an English heritage, plays soccer as its major sport, and has been shown to be fairly re presentative of Caribbean plantation societies (Cross, 1979). Still partially de pendent on Great Britain, it is hoping to achieve full independence in 1981. Nicaragua, independent for generations, has a Spanish he…
Data Collection in Developing Countries
Reviewed in the context of the issues discussed in this Bulletin, this book is very useful in the emphasis it gives to the practical problems of collecting data in sample surveys but weak in that it is far too uncritical of survey techniques vis-à-vis other forms of data collection with respect to cost effectiveness issues.During the Rapid Rural Appraisal Conference, several papers (Carruthers 1979, ElIman 1979, Fallon 1979 and Moore 1979) pointe…
